B 2d Ohio Cavalry, Via Fort Scott Kansas bearing 1¢ blue (63) strip of three, each stamp cancelled with three manuscript strokes, matching "Rockport O. June 25" postmark; couple short perfs, some edge wear, Very Fine, Sold "as is" with regard to label. Estimate  $300 - 400. The Second Ohio Calvary was recruited during the summer of 1861 and mustered into three years of service at Camp Wade. It was then relocated to Camp Dennison where it received marching orders in January 1862. The 2nd Calvary was then moved to Platte City, MO before moving to Fort Scott, Kansas the following month. In Kansas, the Calvary was engaged in fighting Indians and Confederate guerrillas through the end of June 1862. The Calvary then went to Indian Territory before returning to Missouri and finally Ohio. (Image1)

May 1 1862" cds to Hartford Conn.; right stamp with trivial small flaws from edge placement, ex-Walter Senchuk. Estimate  $3,000 - 4,000. A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE MAGNUS MCCLELLAN PATRIOTIC COVER. This Magnus patriotic design features Major General George B. McClellan, who organized the Union Army of the Potomac. In 1864, he was the Democratic Party's candidate for president but was defeated by Abraham Lincoln. The initials "CKW" are written on the shield, presumably by the sender. Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was a print publisher, map dealer, bookseller, and stationer in New York City from 1848 to 1899. During the Civil War, he produced about 700 patriotic envelope designs and about 300 illustrated song sheets, using images of allegorical figures, battle scenes, political cartoons, state emblems, and portraits of prominent men. Feb 28 1863"cds to Shreve Oh., prepaid 1¢ for the carrier fee to the mails and 3¢ domestic postage, ex-Kantor, illustrated as fig. 253. Estimate  $400 - 600. The Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was opened on May 27, 1861 to serve as a rest stop for Union troops passing through Philadelphia. When the Saloon closed four years later, they had served over 315,000 meals and raised close to $58,000 furnishing aid and comfort to Union Soldiers. (Image1)

1782   image(Flag of Truce Usage) via Old Point Comfort Va. to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, homemade cover censored with manuscript "Ex Jno G Eustis", who was a Lieutenant in the 1st Louisiana Artillery, bearing three 1¢ blue (63) singles, stamps defective, tied with segmented cork duplexed with "Old Point Comfort Va. Apr. 18" cds; small cover flaws and some wear, Fine, ex-Walske. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. Lt. John G. Eustis's record is rather detailed with 89 pages, including one receipt he signed at Demopolis Ala. on May 12, 1864, which was only one month after this cover went through Old Point comfort Va. So this cover may have originated in Alabama and was sent through the lines to Union Occupied Territory in Kentucky. (Image1)

1783   image(Prisoner of War Usages) Fort Warren, Boston Harbor Mass., civilian prisoner cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) pair and single, tied by "Paid" framed cancels on cover to Baltimore Md., red "Boston Mass Aug 8" cds, endorsed "Fort Warren, Aug 7th 1862" at top left, this cover was sent by S. Teakley Wallis, a political prisoner to his wife, Very Fine; with 1985 P.F. certificate, signed on reverse by Brian Green. Estimate  $500 - 750. Fort Warren was one of the better run Civil War prisons with a much lower casualty rate than most others during that time. S. Teackley Wallis was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from Baltimore, has as a common roommate at Fort Warren another Baltimore legislator, Henry M. Warfield. During their imprisonment they made a pact that each would name a child after the other. Warfield's granddaughter, Wallis, later became the Duchess of Windsor through her marriage to the abdicated English King Edward VIII. (Image1)
