Peacock", carried by private ship to New York, entered mails with red "New-York 'Ship' Nov 14" cds and "27" rating for 25¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee; stain at top left, F.-V.F. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. Letter with some historical content, "The papers will show that we buried here the Diplomatist Mr. Roberts & Capt. Campbell - we have lost no men - Mr. Roberts had been ill for 3 years & Capt. Campbell was intemperate & imprudent or he would have recovered. We sail to-morrow for the Sandwich Islands and you may expect us at home in April next. I have been in Canton 6 days and made there a number of purchases…"Edmund Roberts, appointed by President Andrew Jackson as America's first envoy to the Far East, went in the U. S. sloop-of-war "Peacock" on two consecutive non-resident embassies to the Eastern courts of Cochin-China, Siam, and Muscat during the years 1832-36. Roberts concluded treaties with Siam and the Sultan of Muscat in Oman, ratified in Washington, D.C. 30 June 1834. He returned in 1836 to exchange ratifications with Oman and Siam; and to Cochin-China for a second attempt at negotiation. On the second mission, Naval Surgeon William Ruschenberger (1807-1895) was commissioned on the U. S. Ship "Peacock", commanded by Lt. C. K. Stribling, and accompanied by the U. S. Schooner "Enterprise" with Lt. Commanding A. S. Campbell; both were under the command of Commodore Edmund P. Kennedy. (Image1)

It is now decided, as certainly as any naval matter can be, that we return by the way of Cape Horn, We shall be at the Sanwitch islands in November and at Valparaiso in December or January - I will write you again at Siam". 607   image(Naval) [Dorr's Rebellion] 1842 (May 18) Kingston, R.I. to Navy Yard, New York, N.Y., datelined folded letter to Lieu. A. A. Harwood (later Commodore during the Civil War) at the Navy Yard entered mails with red "New York May 20" cds and red ms. "1" cent drop rating, letter from Henry H. Harwood to his father reads "Gove. King decamped his men before the Arsenal to defendit when Dorr came up with his men and arranged them in order of battle and planted his cannon on top of the hill so as to have a good shot at us and then commanded his men to fire twice but the would not then he took a match and tuched one off but it flashed in the pan and his men began to move off and then Dorr ran when the Gove. and then, he was no were to be found.", Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. The Dorr Rebellion (1841-1842) was a failed attempt to force broader democracy on the U.S. state of Rhode Island, where a small rural elite was in control of government. It was led by Thomas Wilson Dorr, who mobilized the disfranchised to demand changes to the state's electoral rules. After the defeat described in this letter, Thomas Dorr and his supporters retreated to Chepachet, where they hoped to reconvene the People's Convention. Charterite forces were sent to Woonsocket to defend the village and to cut off the Dorrite forces' retreat. The Charterites fortified a house in preparation for an attack; but it never came, and the Dorr Rebellion soon fell apart. Governor King issued a warrant for Dorr's arrest, with a reward of $5,000. Dorr fled the state. (Image1)

The part letter has some interesting War and Political content including, "When there other those vessels getin and add themselves to the five we now have the Mexican govt will see how completely we have the whole of the coast in our power - and how quickly the Californias would fall into our hands should they declare war or do any hostile act towards the US for the President's message to see what move he will make on the Oregon question but I can never believe until I see it that our Govt are willing to go to war for Oregon or that Great Britain is either…Negotiation will settle all…It would not be a war of slain millions like Napolean's career but constant succession of hand fights in which both parties would often be annihilated. 610   image(Naval) 1846 (Jun. 13) New York, N.Y. to Chardon, Ohio, blue folded letter datelined "U.S. Schooner Bonita, New York, June 13th, 1846", entered mails with indistinct red "New-York '10cts' 13 Jun" cds, some interesting content concerning the war, "We are now detained for want of seamen. As soon as our crews are filled out, all three of the schooners will sail in company for Mexico. They are but 75 tons burthen instead of 90 & carry now a long 32 pounder on a pivot in place of the 24. They are beautiful craft and are like yachts (is that word right?) and no doubt will be clippers. Our service will be most arduous of that of any vessels in the Gulf, and from our light draft we will be able to go up all the rivers and co-operate with the Army…", Very Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. The U.S.S. Bonita was built in 1846 by Brown and Bell, New York, N. Y. she purchased by the United States following the outbreak of the Mexican War and commissioned about May 30. Bonita reported to the Home Squadron at Anton Lizardo, Mexico on July 28th and saw very active service along the Mexican coast. She remained on the Mexican blockade until returning to Norfolk during the summer of 1848. (Image1)

611   image(Naval) 1846 (May 4) U.S.S. Mary's, Pensacola Flor. to Philadelphia Pa., letter datelined "Pensacola, May 4th 1846" written by midshipman Joshua D. Todd with original buff cover with "Pensacola Flor. May 6" cds addressed to his father Purser Samuel P. Todd at the U.S. Navy Yard in Philadelphia Pa., the letter is written just before the first battles of the war, accompanied by second letter from correspondence datelined "Off Brazos de Santiago, May 13th 1846"that reports in great detail the results of the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de Palma, which were American victories that opened the war, he includes a hand drawn plan showing the second battle; some fold separations on letters, F.-V.F., An exceptional Mexican War letter with great battle details. Estimate  $400 - 600. The May 13th letter reads in part, "The news from the Army is of the most cheering kind. Genl. Taylor with the forces under his command had two general engagements with the Mexicans, both of which our troops have been victorious…On the 3rd Genl Taylor with two thousand men marched for Point Isabell for the purpose of protecting his supplies, which had been left at that place. On his return to the camp, he was attacked by the whole of the enemy numbering about seven thousand. The battle commenced at 3 o-clock PM and lasted until dark when the armies were separated. In the morning, the Mexicans declined battle. The loss of the enemy in killed, wounded and prisoners is estimated at five hundred, that of the Americans at forty.Among the killed is Major Brown…Maj. Ringgold was wounded and has since died, Capt. Page was also badly wounded and is not expected to survive. The next day…General T. succeeded in bringing the enemy to battle. A general engagement ensued in which the Mexicans were totally routed, having sustained a loss of killed, wounded and prisoners of one thousand. Several field officers and one general were taken. The loss of our force in killed, wounded amounted to 60. The Mexicans sustained a total defeat, all of them fled from the field leaving all of the artillery munitions of war, baggage and even private property… Genl Taylor's force amounted to only 1500…that of the Mexicans 6000. Genl Vallejo, who was taken prisoner was perfectly surprised that so small a forced defeated the best troops in their army. Genl Arista had proposed an armistice but it has not been accepted…". Raritan, Vera Cruz, Mexico to Germantown Pa., datelined folded letter carried privately and entered mails with "New Orleans La, Apr 6" cds and "10" rating handstamp, excellent naval content refers to Action of Naval Battery at Vera Cruz, "Two days since on my way to the fortification to take my turn in fighting our batteries…We commenced at daylight and fought for eight hours continually and we rec'd from 12 to 15 hundred cannon shot in our fortifications and lost only one officer., Mr. Shubrick and two men and we completely tore up their forts and drove the men from the guns of two others. It was tremendous. The fire we rec'd on our fort from three others for about three hours but we poured into them a wothering fire from our long thirty two pounders and eight inch shell guns. The bombs exploded around us continually and our powder and shot gave out. We had to wait for four hours for more and when we rec'd it the Mexicans had asked for a cessation of hostilities for three hours to bury their dead and it was granted. As soon as the time elapsed the bombardment opened again and I think we will have this town in our possession in three days. more for the destruction fire we pour into the city cannot be more than 500 yards off. Would to God that they would come to terms for our country is determined to carry on the war until victorious come what may…", Very Fine and interesting. Estimate  $200 - 300. The Army officer directing the fire of the Battery at Vera Cruz was Lt. Robert E. Lee. The "Raritan" was the flagship of Commodore David Conner, who was relieved by Commodore M.C. Perry in Mar. 1847. Recommissioned on 22 September 1856, St. Lawrence of 50 guns sailed for the Atlantic coast of South America to become flagship of the Brazil Squadron early the next year. Her service on the Brazil Station was enlivened late in 1858 by the expedition to Paraguay to obtain redress for the unprovoked firing upon the Water Witch during surveying operations in the Paraná River. Feb 8" cds, apparently missed the Boston sailing and carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Feb. 18th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 2nd, red London (3.3) transit backstamp with "GB/1F60c" accountancy h.s., Calais (3.3.57), Spezzia (3.8) backstamp with manuscript "10" crazie postage due, Very Fine. Estimate  $400 - 600. This letter was sent during the Three Months period when the new treaty between Great Britain and France was in effect, but before the treaty between the United States and France became effective. Under this convention, mails that passed through Great Britain bound for France, or points beyond, received a British debit to France. When the Franco-British Convention went into effect on January 1, 1857, the sea postage and postage from England to Sardinia collected on delivery was lowered to 10 décimes for a single rate letter. The French and English still hold quiet possession of Canton, although the greater part of their forces are north the the comissioners and if they do not soon succeed in bring the poor Chinese to terms, they expect to have some fighting to do. Our stay at the Gulf of Pacheli will depend upon Mr. Read. If he does not need us, we will coal at Shanghai and make a summer cruise to Japan…". (Image1)

Jun 6" cds, original datelined enclosure; reduced slightly at left, Very Fine. Scott No. 26 Estimate $200 - 300. This cover was written aboard the U.S.S. Memphis return from the Paraguay Expedition of 1859, which was the largest U.S. fleet ever assembled at that time. The fleet ascended the La Plata River and obtained redress for the firing upon a U.S. Survey steamer by the Paraguayan Government. The Memphis was a small charted screw steamer that was purchased by the Navy upon her return from the expedition and renamed Mystic. (Image1)

Texas during WWI to his mother and father; each with original enclosure detailing his experience during and shortly after WWI, with interesting content including first letter…The Pres. declared war at 1:00 o'clock Thursday. They have seized the German boats in the harbors and I heard they sank one ship, many of the covers prior to going to Europe are patriotic covers and showing the domestic rate change from 2¢ to the 3¢ war rate, other covers including YMCA, covers during tour in Europe with censor date stamp, mentions the activities of pressing back the Germans during the war, post war correspondence (many from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) with mention of the first aeroplane flying from a American battleship and the successful attempt by Navy Curtiss NC flying boat NC-4 to become the first airplane to cross the Atlantic; cover condition a bit mixed, F.-V.F. overall. Texas during WWII, good showing of U.S. Naval postmarks and censor markings including "Free" mail during Nov-Dec of 1944, V-Mail and a few ephemera items, covers mostly without contents (with letter donation forms) but includes a couple enclosures written after D-Day with interesting content including crossing the English Channel, shooting at enemy's vital targets, At one time, we had 27 enemy prisoners on board…They didn't look like supermen to me., being bombed by enemy planes and glider bombs, etc.; an interesting and historical wartime correspondence. Estimate  $300 - 400. During WWII, the Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic, and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
