Lovell, Columbia S.C., 11 March 1863"; partial flap, Very Fine and attractive. Scott No. 2  Estimate $750 - 1,000. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE STONE Y MULTIPLE USED ON COVER, THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE HAVE SEEN. Major Gen. Mansfield Lovell (1822-1886) was in command at New Orleans when the city fell to the Union in April 1862 and was blamed for the loss of the city. He commanded an Infantry Division at Corinth and Coffeeville later in 1862, but after Coffeeville was relieved for losing New Orleans, and never given any further assignments during the war. 2303 2 imageConfederacy, 1861, 10¢ Blue, huge margins except just clear at bottom, tied by "Mobile Ala Oct 11" cds on circa 1862 homemade brown cover addressed to Lauderdale Depot Miss., original letter to sender's wife accompanies with great content: "I am sorry I did not return from the Depot on ascertaining the condition of things in a military point of view - Three trains of empty cars pass up just about the time we left - In the course of the day dince two three more passed up - The object of this dispatch of so much transportation, is to remove our military stores - wounded soldiers etc. etc. to a lower point on the R Road and to afford any other needed assistance to our defeated army … Many parent here whose sons were in companies known to have been almost annihilated are still in a state of fearful anxiety as to the fate of their sons…One regiment was sent up the road last evening - another goes today, and as many as can be spared from this point will be sent. The dread seems to be, that the enemy may reach Columbus where we have important stores and machine shops…" This was written after the fall of Corinth, Very Fine. Scott No. 2  Estimate $300 - 400. Nathan Esq., Treasury Department at Richmond Va., inside use bearing 1862, 5¢ blue #6, vertical pair, uncancelled and no postal markings to Mrs. Slaughter, care Dr. Slaughter at Orange C.H., Va., most likely ended up being handcarried outside the postal service; small stamp flaws, backflap missing, other three flaps reattached, Very Fine appearing; with 2007 C.S.A. certificate with no opinion on origin of inside #6 pair. Scott No. 3 + 7 Estimate $3,000 - 4,000. A REMARKABLE COMBINATION FRANKING, THIS BEING THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF A 1862 2¢ STRIP OF THREE AND 1862 5¢ SINGLE PREPAYING THE 10¢ RATE. 2394 12c imageConfederacy, 1863, 10¢ Greenish Blue, four margins, tied by a partial strike of the "Richmond, Va Jun 30" cds on inside use of turned cover addressed to Basil Manly DD in Greenwood, S.C., second use (outside) appears to be a forwarded usage with remnants of a removed stamp at the upper left corner (town of origin unknown) and addressed to Rev B. Manly DD Care of Thos Barlow Esqr, Tuscaloosa, Lowndes County, Ala, forwarded with Tuscaloosa is lined through and the cover forwarded to Benton, Alabama with the addition of 1863, 10¢ blue (12), four large even margins, tied by the "Tuscaloosa, Ala Sep 23" cds circa 1863; period notations on the back of the cover appear to be an extension of the sender's letter written on the outside of the cover, inside usage displayed with upper left corner folded down., Fine, an interesting and unusual cover with what appears to be a triple usage.
