John Brown was an ardent abolitionist who believed it was his duty to fight pro-slavery settlors in Kansas. He hoped that a dramatic act would inspire a slave revolt and led 20 men in an attack on the Union Army Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Va. on October 16, 1859. Confederacy, Confederate States Marine Corps, blue cover with "Paid" handstamp addressed to Lieut. Edward Crenshaw C.S.M.C. (Confederate States Marine Corps), Drewry's Bluff Va., original letter datelined "C.S. Str. Tallahassee, Wilmington NC Oct 19th, 1864" sent by Private Joseph S. Jones C.S.M.C. thanking the Lieut. for helping him get paid; no flap, Very Fine and rare. Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. Lieut. Crenshaw was the commander of the C.S. marine contingent on the CSS Tallahassee before transferring to Drewrys Bluff in early October 1863. Drewrys Bluff Va. was the headquarters for the CS Marines. The Confederate States Marine Corps was a very small service with an authorized strength of only 1,026 enlisted men and 65 officers. However, the Corps never approached its full authorized strength. The main duties of the CSMC were to act as guards at naval stations, man shore defenses, and serve on CS warships. Some CS marines also served late in the war with the famed Naval Brigade attached to the Confederate Army. Private Jones was later captured at Fort Fisher on Jan. 1st 1865 and confined as POW at Point Lookout. (Image1)

Confederacy, "Vernon Hill, Apl 29th 1861" (Va.), manuscript postmark with matching "J. C. Walker" postmaster free frank on orange cover addressed to Lieut. S. H. Walker of the Mt. Vernon Guard at Richmond Va.; opening tears at top affect markings, Fine and scarce postmaster free frank use. Estimate $150 - 200. The Vernon Hill (Halifax County) postmaster used his free franking privilege to send a letter to his son who had just joined a Virginia unit. This was a private use abusing the privilege. The free frank could still be used for postmaster's mail at this time as the free frank was not abolished until the CSA Postal Service started operation on June 1, 1861. Samuel H. Walker was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the Mount Vernon Guard on April 24, 1861, this unit would later become Company G of the 17th Va. Infantry. He is listed as having died of disease in Richmond on August 3, 1861. (Image1)

Stephens in Montgomery, Ala., docketing on reverse indicates an Atlanta citizen was writing to apply for the position of Quartermaster; the 3¢ postage overpaid the 2¢ drop letter rate, Very Fine. Scott No. US #26 Estimate $100 - 150. The Confederate States of America was formed on Feb. 4th 1861 at Montgomery Ala. The city remained the capital of the new nation until May 28, 1861, when the government was moved to Richmond, Virginia. The Confederate Post Office Department did not take over the postal system until June 1, 1861 and until that date the United States continued to operate the postal service in the seceded states.
