Scott No. 24L2 $4,500+. ONE OF ONLY 15 RECORDED GENUINE COVERS, THIS BEING ONE OF ONLY A FEW EXAMPLES THAT ARE TIED. One of only three recorded covers with the manuscript "F" for Hale's Agent Farnwell. There are only two other covers recorded in the Lyons census (Penny Post, January 2006) that have the manuscript "F" marking for Farnwell who was Hale's agent. City Despatch Post Endorsement Letter, 1842, folded letter with red "New York, Jan 18" cds and matching "Free" handstamp, to Postmaster General Wickliffe in Washington D.C., datelined "New York, Jan 17 (1842)" from old friend and owner of the New York Express newspaper, James Brooks, accompanied by news clipping and letter content reminding Wickliffe of previous recommendation of a City Despatch Post type carrier system…I enclose you an advertisement showing that private enterprise other than the Post Office is starting an enterprise similar to that I suggested to you.…I have no doubt this private enterprise will make money. If to it were added the letters of the Post Office - an endorsement of its character & security, how much your revenues might be increased?; light over toning and some separation along folds, Fine, this is the Earliest Known Advertisement For the City Despatch Post which would commence business the following month. Estimate $300 - 400. About six months later, Wickliffe authorized the purchase of the City Despatch Post from its owner, Alexander M. Gregg, thereby creating the base for the New York carrier system. Spaulding's Penny Post (2¢) Value Omitted Coin Handstamp, bold strike on folded letter sheet addressed to Buffalo, N.Y., red "New York, 10cts, Dec 15" integral rate cds, "Recieved Dec 16th, 1847" pencil docketing to the right of Spaulding handstamp, Very Fine, ex-Needham, Hollowbush, Petri & Hahn; signed George Sloane, with 2005 P.F. certificate. Estimate $7,500 - 10,000. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF SPAULDING'S PENNY POST COIN HANDSTAMP WITH VALUE REMOVED. Proprietor of Spaulding's Penny Post, Enos W. Spaulding, raised the posts letter rate on November 15th, 1847 from one to two cents. Three different Spaulding's coin handstamps are known and are all unique. The first bearing the "One Cent" value is undated but obvious was used prior to the rate change. This cover with the value removed was posted approximately one month after the rate change to two cents. A later usage of the coin handstamp in April of 1848 bears a illustrated dove at the center. Shortly thereafter, Spaulding introduced his Striding Messenger handstamp and adhesives. `. (Image1)
