Claude/10 Juin 67" double circle c.d.s. at left, Basse Terre transit on the reverse, red British packet entry transit and matching "PD" boxed handstamp that just ties the strip, backstamped Quimper, light cover creasing and small tear at right plus edge wear that very slightly affects the stamps, still a very fine and rare cover; Saint Claude has more than its share of unusual postmarks, this one puts an "e" on the "Ste." abbreviation incorrectly since the name is Saint without an "e" on the end; this must have been quickly corrected as this is one of the very few covers recorded with this spelling error. Colonies Yvert #17, 1	French Colonies Yvert #17, 18, 1872-76 5c Green on blue and 10c Brown on rose horizontal strip of three, both values with large margins all around being affixed slightly over the edge but not damaging, just tied to small cover from Saint Claude to France by two strikes of "Guadeloupe/St. Claude/28 Fevr. 79" double-circle c.d.s. (corrected without the "e" on "St."), additional strike at right, similar Basse Terre transit on the reverse, backstamped Paris, very fine and attractive; this franking was intended to pay the U.P.U. foreign mail to France, however in this period the U.P.U. rate was in flux and changed several times, the 35c rate is very scarce being in use about ten months, but in fact, the rate was reduced to 25c about two weeks earlier on February 16, 1879 and this cover is actually 10c overpaid; a rare usage from this small town; ex-Dubus. 289			1866 Saint Martin prepaid stampless mourning cover, an extremely rare posting from the remote island dependency of Saint Martin to Pointe-a-Pitre with "St. Martin/(Guadeloupe)/11 Sep 1866" large rimless c.d.s., large boxed "P.P" handstamp indicating that the domestic postage of 20c had been paid in cash, Pointe-a-Pitre rimless c.d.s. backstamp on the reverse, slight stain affects the postmark, otherwise an attractive and fresh cover, very fine; it is interesting to see how this island that is over 100 miles northeast of Guadeloupe proper can have postings at the domestic rate and other closer foreign islands would have to pay much more; a very rare cover of which very few exist from Saint Martin. Colonies Yvert #4	French Colonies Yvert #4, 1865 20c Blue, attractive single franking paying the 20c domestic rate, mostly clear to large margins all around, just into the frame at top, an extremely rare posting from the remote island dependency of Saint Martin, stamp neatly tied to small 1873 cover by unusually well struck blue "Guadeloupe/St. Martin/13 Mai 73" double-circle c.d.s., backstamped Basse Terre, choice very fine and remarkably attractive; the small island of St. Martin is the most remote of the island dependencies of Guadeloupe, being over 100 miles northeast of the main islands, not only is it small but only the northern half is under French rule, the southern portion being Dutch; nineteenth century mail from St. Martin is of the greatest rarity and this is one of the very few Eagle covers recorded; signed R. Colonies Yvert #17, 2	French Colonies Yvert #17, 22, 1872 5c Green on blue horizontal strip of four and 15c Bister horizontal pair, an attractive franking, each multiple with large margins to just in at places, being applied to a small cover the right stamp of the pair was wrapped around to the reverse and has since been opened out, posted out of the enormously rare island dependency of St. Martin for French packet service to France, stamps with central blue 7x7 fine-point lozenge cancels, a device apparently not in use in 1873 when the previous cover was posted, well struck matching blue "Guadeloupe/St. Martin/2 Sept. 75" double-circle c.d.s. below, Basse Terre French packet sorting transit on the reverse, red "PD" boxed handstamp and blue St. Nazaire entry transit that ties both multiples, a fresh and unusually choice cover, very fine; an amazingly rare pre-U.P.U. cover with a lovely Ceres franking being one of only a very small number of Ceres covers recorded from this remote island; ex-Levett. 292			1861 Sainte Rose prepaid stampless cover, a lovely petite blue envelope posted from the tiny village of Sainte Rose, carried by British packet with the 50c prepaid rate paid in cash, very rare black "Ste. Rose/Guadeloupe/22 Juin 1861" rimless c.d.s., similar Basse Terre transit on the reverse, plus well positioned black "P.P" and red "PD" handstamps and an exceptionally clearly struck Calais entry transit, backstamped Bordeaux, extremely fine and a very pretty cover; Sainte Rose is the northern most village on the island of Basse Terre; an extremely rare prepaid posting at this early period and one of only a couple examples of this marking known to exist from this small village, ex-Dubus. 295		France Yvert #92	France Yvert #92, 1879 25c Bister on yellow, a rare and highly unusual usage of the perforated Sage issue of France, tied to 1884 French packet cover to France from the small village of Sainte Rose paying the 25c U.P.U. rate, stamp tied by "Guadeloupe/Sainte Rose/6 Juin 84" double-circle c.d.s. with inverted date, additional strike at right, Pointe-a-Pitre transit on the reverse, Line "A" French packet transit on the front, backstamped Besancon, scuffs to stamp and folds to cover affecting the stamp, nevertheless a very rare usage; French stamps were not accepted as franking in the colonies during this period and yet this passed through the post offices of Guadeloupe and France without detection, probably because the France Sage issue was so similar to the French Colonies Dubois issue of the same value; signed C. 297		Yvert #1	Yvert #1, 1884 "G.P.E./20" provisional surcharge on 20c Brown, an exceptionally rare example of this first provisional surcharge on the 20c imperforate value, four clear to large margins, in mixed franking with French Colonies 5c Green (Yvert #49) tied to an extremely rare cover from the tiny village of Saint Sauveur, stamps tied by indistinct but identifiable "Gouadeloupe/St. Sauveur" c.d.s. of April 24, 1884 with "Guadeloupe" misspelled, slightly better strike at right, posted to Paris, France at the 25c U.P.U rate, Basse Terre transit, backstamped, cover with vertical fold and opening tear at top not affecting stamps or markings, otherwise very fine; Saint Sauveur is a tiny village on the southern coast of Basse Terre between Capesterre and Trois Rivieres, at the time this location was so small that it does not appear on historical maps, no postal marking was known from this town until the discovery of this cover which represents the first recorded example; not to mention the elusive first issue franking of Guadeloupe that is a rarity in its own right from any location; an important rarity for a postal history collection of Guadeloupe. 298			1861 Les Saintes unpaid stampless cover to Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean and department of France, with extremely rare black "Les Saintes/Guadeloupe/20 Mai 1861" rimless c.d.s., similar rimless Basse Terre transit c.d.s. on the reverse, "6" rate handstamp for 6 decimes due for the single unpaid rate to France, via British packet with light strike of a black Calais entry transit c.d.s., Paris transit on the reverse and backstamped Porto Vecchio, tears to backflap in opening, otherwise very fine; a very rare posting from this tiny Island in the Guadeloupe group just south of Basse Terre; like the double circle postmark from this tiny village this marking is extraordinarily rare with no more than a couple examples known from this period and particularly desirable going to Corsica. Colonies Yvert #19	French Colonies Yvert #19, 1877 15c Bister, attractive four-margined example in a rare single franking paying the domestic letter rate of 15c, tied to small cover from the small village on Terre de Haute in the small Saintes Islands south of the large island of Basse Terre, stamp tied by black "Guadeloupe/Saintes T.D.H./3 Dec. 77" double-circle c.d.s. with additional full strike at right, backstamped Basse Terre, portion of backflap missing, very fine; in 1877 the domestic rate was reduced to 15c which happened at about the same time that the rare 15c Ceres with large numerals was issued, this allowed for a very rare single franking for a short period until the domestic rate was again increased to 20c; a very rare cover of this scarce franking from the tiny town of Terre de Haute in the Saintes Islands; signed R.
