89 c 457 image#457, 4c Brown rotary coil, perf. 10 vert., exceptionally scarce joint line pair and single, both items with small portion of manila coil leader tape at right, tied to registered Navy Athletic Association corner card cover to Philadelphia by Annapolis, MD. ovals, November 5, 1915 earliest documented usage, Annapolis registry c.d.s. on reverse, backstamped, cover opened at top and also slightly reduced at bottom, otherwise very fine; this cover is extremely interesting in a number of ways, this coil was apparently issued for general distribution in February of 1916, but a small quantity was sent to Annapolis in late 1915 where they were used on covers, such as this, to send tickets for the Army-Navy game, these being sent to his brother by Vice-Admiral Blakely, a most unusual franking with the joint line pair and leader tape on a very early cover that Siskin speculated might even be a first day cover; signed by Siskin, Agris and accompanied by clear 1989 APS certificate; ex-Siskin, Agris. 94 c 467 image#467, 5c Carmine error, single (damaged at right in opening) tied to petite lady's cover by both a flag machine cancel and a handstamped duplex of Portland Maine (duplex added when the small envelope went through the machine incorrectly), May 22, 1917 earliest documented usage, posted to San Francisco, fine appearance; this is truly a remarkable usage, this error, caused by transferring the wrong denomination into three positions of the 2c plate no. 7942, though not caught by the Bureau of Engraving, was quickly recognized by collectors, thus many were saved mint with only a very few being used, mostly philatelicly inspired, in fact any cover is of great rarity with less than 20 covers known; however this cover has all the earmarks of a legitimate usage by someone who did not recognize the error, it is paying the 2c letter rate and certainly the recipient did not recognize the importance as evidenced by the way he opened it, this all coincides with it being the earliest documented usage, apparently used before the error was widely publicized; 1997 PF certificate. 100 O 477 image#477, 50c Light violet, a wonderfully well centered single in not so light of a shade, tied together in a high value franking to large piece with $1.00 Violet black, $2.00 Dark blue and horizontal pair of $5.00 Light green (#478-80), plus 1c and 2c singles from the perf. 11 series, all tied by Foreign Station, N.Y. ovals, this piece is dated August 31, 1917, the earliest documented usage for the 50c Light violet by a purple New York, Foreign branch registry c.d.s. at bottom right, slight aging to piece hardly having any affect on the stamps, very fine; these high denominations, which were used for packages and foreign postings, as this is, are rarely found on full covers, the 50c value is especially rare and this date was also the earliest documented usage for the $1.00 Violet black when the accompanying certificate was issued (now May 24, 1917, see next lot); an impressive and attractive piece suitable for exhibition; clear 1996 APS certificate.
