1880-1948 Substantial postal history collection, consisting of 25
covers starting as early as an 1880 cover to the United States, also a
nineteenth century map of the islands, majority of the covers are
nineteenth century or just into the turn of the century, most of which are
commercial usages, we note a 2p Green (S.G. #40) on cover to Sydney per the
ship "S.S. Fiona" and another pre-U.P.U cover to the Bank of New Zealand in
Melborne with 4p on 1p Mauve (S.G. #41) tied by "Suva/Fiji/ 18 JA 1891"
c.d.s., per the ship "S.S. Taviuni", twelve of the covers are later mostly
nineteenth century covers with the 1891-1902 new values and Pirogue
designs, these are interesting in that most are foreign mail covers to
various destinations, we note three each to Great Britain and France, two
to Germany, a registered cover to Italy and one cover to the United States,
also an 1886 registered cover to the unusual destination of Hamilton,
Bermuda, all of these have various frankings up to three colors and various
perforations of the period, twentieth century covers include two registered
with "Fiji/Official C.P. Paid" plus adhesives for registry fee, also a 1930
newspaper wrapper to the United States with red "Postage Paid in
Cash/Suva-Fiji/18 Aug. 30" c,d,s, and first day covers of the 1935 Jubilee
complete and 1948 Silver Wedding complete, finally there are three inbound
covers, one an 1896 Great Britain cover forwarded to Fiji from Australia
and two 1909-10 European postal cards to Levuka, condition varies as is
very typical of covers from these islands so faults are to be expected to
both covers and stamps, but a number are fine-very fine as well and this is
a nice collection of material documenting the usages of the various issues
of this country. |

Country Post Office postal
history collection, a wonderful selection of covers, postcards and
stamps with the cancellations of the rural post offices that were located
throughout the widely spread islands of Fiji, this category includes all
but the two major ports of Lavuka and Suva, some of these are as small as
just a plantation or mission, others are quite large settlements, but mail
from any of them is decidedly scarce as nearly all the postal material
available comes out of the capital of Levuka or later Suva when the capital
was moved there, one interesting and popular feature of these post offices
is that steel straightline cancellors were issued about the turn of the
century during the Edward VII reign and were used through the George V
period, this collection consists of 21 covers or cards, two fronts and 44
stamps with these cancellations, nineteen different post offices are
represented here and usually each office has at least one cover, they can
be divided up by the island on which they are located, the largest and main
Island of Viti Levu has mostly commercial usages from Nadroga, Naitoniton,
Navola (rare small post office that was only open nine years; commercial
cover to "Fiji Times" in Suva), Raki Raki, scarce Sabeto straightline on
card to New Zealand, and Tunulou, the other large island of Vanua Levu has
Davutu, Naduri, Rabi, Savu Savu East and Waimotu, this last a registered
"Iremonger" cover to England from this small community, other islands
include Naidiri from island of Kadavu, Taviuni Island has an embossed stamp
card (illegal usuage in the British Empire) and commercial cover to Norway,
both from Somo Somo, plus Taviuni North and Vuna, and finally the Lau group
of small Islands include Lakeba, Loma Loma, Moala and Totoya, most covers
have Edward VII frankings and some with George V, the single stamps that
accompany many of these covers are of the same period, condition varies,
commercial inter-island covers tend to have faults as usual, cards and the
few philatelic covers are usually fine-very fine; an exceptional collection
of these small post offices that are hard to find individually let alone a
whole collection. (Image) |

#6, 1852 1c Black on magenta surface-colored
paper, Ty. B without period after Guiana, a rarely found sound used
example of this very rare stamp, exceptionally attractive with unblemished
deep red surface color, very neatly cancelled with "Demerara/JY31 1855"
double arc c.d.s., very few of this issue have survived fault-free due to
the fragile nature of the surface-colored paper, making them prone to
surface abrasions, thins and creasing which affect a large portion of the
known copies and is considered the norm, this stamp is lacking any of
these, though when offered in the Caspary sale a normal light hinge mark
caused them to describe it with "unnoticeable faint horiz. crease,"
subsequently submitted to the Philatelic Foundation in 1958 as creased
causing the error to be perpetuated in the certificate, however when last
offered in an October 18,1996 Robert A. Siegel auction, it was specifically
described as "sound in every respect" and realized $5,500.00, plus the 10%
buyer's premium, we are in agreement with its perfectly sound status,
extremely fine; 1958 PF certificate; ex-Caspary (S.G. #9;
£4,250). (Image) |
