1909 Bluish Papers
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
218 og 359 image#359, 3c Deep violet on bluish paper, magnificently centered within large margins, deep luxuriant color and a crisp detailed impression, o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; an especially desirable and rare stamp in this gem quality; photocopy of a 1974 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the top left stamp. Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
219 og 360 image#360, 4c Orange brown on bluish paper, fabulously wide margins all around and being incredibly well centered within them, sumptuously rich color and a sharp prooflike impression on immaculate paper, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, superb. This incomparable gem is arguably the finest recorded example of the Four Cent Bluish Paper rarity. Its margins and centering are unlike any other we can find in any of the past great auction sales of important United States stamps. This value, along with the Eight Cent from the series, were never intended to be issued to the public. Approximately 90 of each were released in an exchange with the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C. to obtain other rarities for the nation's collection. While both the Four Cent and Eight Cent are known in similar quantities, it has been our experience that the Four Cent value is far more challenging to find both well centered and with large margins. An exciting opportunity to acquire one of the great rarities in United States philately in the finest condition imaginable. Lightly signed with H.F. Colman's handstamp (a well-known 20th century dealer and expert), as well as being accompanied by a 2000 PF certificate. (Image) 24,000.00

SOLD for $47,500.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
220 og 361 image#361, 5c Blue on bluish paper, a marvelously well centered and margined mint example of this rare stamp, possessing larger margins than usually associated with this value, as a significant number of existing examples are quite off center, wonderfully fresh and crisp, with deep luxuriant color on bright paper, especially clean o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; few Five Cent Bluish Papers exist this choice; 1998 PF certificate. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $6,250.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
