1861-1866 Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
141 ng 74 image#74, 3c Scarlet, a fresh unused example of this trial printing rarity, deep luxuriant color which is devoid of the usual "mottled" appearance which typifies most existing copies, strong crisp impression, centered just a bit to right, fine; 2001 PF certificate. (Image) 7,000.00

SOLD for $3,250.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
142 O 74 image#74, 3c Scarlet, an exceptional used example of this trial printing rarity, characteristic four stroke pen cancel, being among the finest quality examples in existence, outstanding centering within very large margins, gloriously intense color and a razor-sharp impression on bright paper, fully intact perforations all around, even still retaining a small part of its original gum, extremely fine; very few examples of the Three Cent Scarlet exist, whether mint or used, and despite the disparity in catalog value we believe the used examples are far more elusive than mint copies; the used examples with pen strokes are thought to come from a supply of Three Cent Scarlet stamps obtained by the Washington, D.C. stamp dealer Carl F. Rothfuchs in 1893; 1991 PF certificate; ex-Lyons. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $8,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM

(Image) 4,500.00

SOLD for $5,500.00

150 og 78 image#78, 24c Lilac, brilliantly fresh mint example, possessing especially rich and true Lilac color, plus its impression is well defined on crisp paper, far better centered and margined than usually found, as this stamp is notorious for being found quite off center, part o.g., very fine and quite choice; far more elusive in this quality than many collectors realize; 1999 PF certificate. (Image) 1,200.00

151 O 78 image#78, 24c Lilac, a visually striking jumbo-margined used example, boasting enormously large margins all around and being extraordinarily well centered within them, lovely rich shade, very light face-free cancel, extremely fine; an impressive gem; 1993 PF certificate. (Image) 100.00

SOLD for $375.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
152 O 78c image#78c, 24c Blackish violet, a select used example of one of the rarest and most elusive of all the famous shade varieties found on any 19th century U.S. stamp, being far more difficult to find than the 1857 Indian red, 1861 Pigeon blood pink or 1861 24c Violet, featuring an extraordinary overall freshness for a used stamp, with incredibly rich unmistakable Blackish violet color and a razor-sharp impression on brilliantly white paper, marvelously well centered and margined for this, as most known examples are quite poorly centered, excellent strike of a black crossroads postmark, plus just a trace of a red cancel at bottom left, very fine and exceedingly choice; given the fact that there are only two or three known mint examples of this rare color variety, a used example seems to be an excellent alternative for most collectors, particularly in this outstanding quality; 1993 PSE certificate. (Image) 2,250.00

SOLD for $3,750.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
1867 Grilled Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
153 og 79 image#79, 3c Rose, "A" grill, a very rare mint example of this notoriously difficult stamp, being among the very few that exist both sound and still retaining its full original gum, attractively centered, rich color, usual irregular perforations characteristic to virtually every known all-over grilled stamp, very fine for the issue; the Scott catalog value quoted is for "fine-very fine copies with minor perf. faults."; 1954 PF certificate. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $2,900.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
154 O 79 image#79, 3c Rose, "A" grill, a remarkable quality example of this very scarce stamp, being in a condition that is far superior to most existing examples, possessing near perfect centering within uncharacteristically large margins, additionally its color is far brighter and its impression more intense than usual on bright fresh paper, beautifully cancelled with a neat light town c.d.s. and duplex crossroads postmark, while this stamp has the customary irregular perforations due to the all-over grill, they are much more intact than usual, one of the few used examples of a Three Cent "A" Grill that is truly extremely fine; 1995 PF certificate. (Image) 1,100.00

SOLD for $2,700.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
155 O 81 image#81, 30c Orange, "A" grill, used, deep luxuriant color, bold perfectly struck crossroads postmark, centered just slightly to top right as are all known examples, characteristic irregular perforations of the experimental all-over "A" grill, small tear in right margin, fine. With only eight Thirty Cent "A" Grill stamps recorded, all of which are used, this stamp ranks as one of the greatest classic rarities in United States philately. One of the eight is housed in the New York Public Library's collection and, in all likelihood, will never be available to collectors. All possess virtually the same centering and are cancelled quite similarly to the example offered here, although the strike of this cancel is particularly choice. As is widely documented, the all-over nature of the experimental "A" grills found on the enormously rare Five Cent and Thirty Cent values cause irregular perforations on virtually all known copies. Of the seven Thirty Cent "A" grills potentially available to collectors, six have missing or pulled perforations similar to the Lessin example and most have faults that are considerably more severe. A virtual once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the great rarities in all of philately. This exciting stamp has graced several of the most important United States collections ever formed, including the Worthington, Hind and Isleham collections. The footnote in Scott for both Scott #80 and #81 reads "All are more or less faulty and/or off center. Values are for off-center examples with small perforation faults." Accompanied by a 1986 PF certificate. (Image) 60,000.00
