1788 O R157 image#R157, 10c Dark green, magenta "I.R." provisional handstamped overprint, an especially desirable used example of this rare provisional, possessing the finest centering and margins we have ever seen, as most are found quite off center, deep luxuriant color and a crisp impression on bright paper, portion of "Michigan Mutual Life Insurance Co." straight line handstamp cancel in violet, plus usual "7/12" manuscript cancel, faint trace of a bend/crease at bottom right which is not even mentioned on the accompanying certificate, still extremely fine; among the finest of the 66 reported copies; 1992 PSE certificate for a block of four, this being the top right stamp. 1789 O R158A image#R158A, 1c Dark yellow green, "Chapman" provisional overprint, an extraordinarily choice example of this provisional revenue rarity, of which only 250 were issued, with government approval, for the private use by the Chapman Steamboat Line, which operated steamboat freighters along the Erie Canal; exceptionally well centered and margined, particularly when compared to the existing population, strong rich color and impression, very light and unobtrusive July 8, 1898 handstamp cancel, very fine; an enormously rare sound example of the Chapman overprint; in Larry Lyons census, he records only fourteen examples, one of which is on a document and fully ten are faulty, leaving only three sound singles available; a stamp that is missing in even the most advanced revenue collections; 1992 PSE certificate; ex-Zoellner.
