744 O RO129a Image#RO129a, John J. Macklin & Co., 1c Black, rouletted, an incredible match stamp rarity, this stamp was printed by the American Phototype Co. in violation of the contract of Butler & Carpenter to produce private die proprietary stamps (American Phototype had a contract to produce wrappers not adhesive stamps), a controversy ensued between Macklin and Butler & Carpenter who considered the stamps that had been produced to be "a wretched piece of work and affords no guarantee against counterfeiting whatever", in fact counterfeits have been produced to defraud the collector not the government, evidently few of the genuine stamps were produced and the real quantity of genuine examples is very small, it is hard to know how many have survived as the few recorded in surveys may have included facsimiles as well as the real stamp, our guess is that there are a total of less than six genuine examples known, another factor that is not included in the Scott listing is that there are two papers on which this stamp is found, a thin white paper and this stamp which is on a thin yellowish tissue paper as was used for match wrappers which the American Phototype company normally produced, this is the only known example on this paper, small thin spot and light creases as would be expected on this fragile paper and these are actually very minor, otherwise very fine and one of the highlights of the Frank L. Himpsl collection; 1991 PF certificate; ex-Col. Green and Joyce. (Image) $10,000.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
Will close during Public Auction

748 O RO145a Image#RO145a, Pierce Match Co., 1c Green on old paper, an attractive appearing example of this terribly difficult stamp, with virtually all known examples being faulty or repaired, this copy is neatly repaired, deep intense color, very fine appearance. (Image) $4,000.00

750 O RO149a Image#RO149a, V.R. Powell, 1c Black on full wrapper, an enormously rare match stamp as a full size wrapper, with probably less than five such examples in existence, wrapper was once neatly folded well clear of the design for display purposes in an album, there are a few typical paper irregularities common to this tissue thin paper, very faint foxing, nonetheless very fine for this when compared to others, including the single Joyce example which had a large tear; ex-Combs. (Image) $7,000.00

SOLD for $4,250.00
Will close during Public Auction
751 O RO150a Image#RO150a, V.R. Powell, 1c Black on buff, cut to shape, printed on a very thin tissue paper and thus has faults as all known copies have, including a couple small holes at bottom, fine appearance for this rare stamp. (Image) $2,750.00

SOLD for $1,050.00
Will close during Public Auction
752 og RO182b Image#RO182b, Wilmington Parlor Match Co., 1c Black on silk paper, a very rare example, being a mint copy with full original gum, in fact, this was at one time a horizontal pair with the ex-Joyce example, clipped perfs. at bottom as usual on this, strong color, faint translucent spot at top, fine; it is believed only four or five examples are currently known, as some of the previously recorded copies are now known to be on experimental silk paper and not this rare silk paper; ex-Col. Green. (Image) $12,500.00

SOLD for $3,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
