eleven covers are franked with various issues of stamps from the imperfor1855-75 France inbound to Bolivia postal history collection, assemblage of sixteen covers mounted and written up on pages showing an interesting range of usages to Bolivia, eleven covers are franked with various issues of stamps from the imperforate Napoleons to the 1870's perforated Ceres issues, most of the earlier covers with imperforate and perforated Napoleon issues were sent via British packet by way of Panama, includes two covers prior to 1862 when the British post office in Cojiba was opened, but most of the later went through that post office and includes a July 1862 quadruple rate cover with two horizontal strips of three of the 80c Rose on pinkish (#20) with clear "Cobija/C/JY 10 62" c.d.s. being a very early marking of this British Agency post office in Bolivia, other attractive and colorful frankings paying single and double rates with various frankings, also five stampless covers, one an 1856 folded paid letter by British packet to Corocoro with "Lamar" straight line handstamp on arrival in Bolivia, plus four others carried or placed in the mails by forwarders including an 1874 cover to Sucre with fancy ornate "Cancelado" oval of Lamar and "Dorado Hermanos/Antofagasta" oval forwarding agent's handstamp, the collection is neat with mostly entire folded letters, condition of the stamps is varied but most are fine-very fine and an attractive collection of inbound mail. 2065 c 1861-70 Great Britain inbound correspondence to Bolivia, collection of eight entire folded letters showing various usages and rates from Great Britain to Bolivia, mostly a correspondence to J.M Artola & Co. at Cobija, starts as early as an 1861 cover with right wing margin horizontal pair of the 1856 1/- Green (#28) paying the 2/- rate, includes covers from about this period sent due including one with 1p Red for internal Great Britain postage and another without stamps, both marked 4/- in manuscript, other covers have later 1865 1/- Green franking of plate 4 (#48) including single rates and a double rate with a strip of four of the 1/- Green, concluding with two 1870 covers showing the rate change to 1/6 with 1/- Green and 6p Red violet frankings (#51, 54), all routed through Panama, usually receiving one of the various typed of British post office transits there and then with "Cobija/C" c.d.s. of the British post office in Bolivia except for the 1861 cover as the British Agency wasn't established in Cobija until 1862, fine-very fine; Bolivia was a scarcer destination for even Great Britain as the Cobija British Agency was one of the least used British post offices; nice postal history lot of these scarce covers. 2066 c 1776-1873 Peru inbound postal history collection to Bolivia, neatly mounted on pages and in a deluxe custom album with a total of seventeen covers starting as early as 1776 in the colonial period with a lovely entire folded letter to Oruro with early "Lima" straight line handstamp, seven others of the stampless period including a couple with Bolivian transits of Oruro and Lamar, the rest are stamped covers, most with imperforates with four single letter rate covers with various 1d frankings, also a double rate and two triple rated covers including a nice strip of three of the 1d Green (#14), also two covers with the perforated 1865 issue, one with a strip of three, two pairs and a single of the 5c Green (#16) paving the double rate to Bolivia, all are very clean and attractive and virtually all are entire folded letters, very fine; a lovely postal history collection from Bolivia's neighbor. common, and because position 100 is in the correct upright position it is be1863 1/2r-2r Blue Garcia essays, complete sheet of 110, an extremely rare full sheet in blue, these essays were produced in two colors, the black being considerably more common, and because position 100 is in the correct upright position it is believed the blue was printed later after the correction was made, this full sheet of 110 positions has had the selvage removed to the frames all around and mounted on a card, the card has cracked or chipped away near the corners affecting the top right stamp and causing a tear in the bottom right vertical pair, otherwise fine; actually condition is of little consideration as this is the only sheet that is currently known; at one point there were two sheets recorded in blue, but the other sheet has been lost with its whereabouts unknown and many believe it may have been broke up; extremely rare and a necessary showpiece for an award-winning collection of Bolivia; Scott values the blue at twice the value of the black or $150.00 per impression and a total of $16,500.00 for singles in the sheet. 2070 Ebl 1863 1/2r-2r Black Garcia essay speciallized study written up on pages, over 45 essays in both black and blue with a very large portion of those being the scarcer blue including a lovely vertical block of 22 being the two left vertical rows of the sheet showing all three values, in addition there are 47 blue essays with bogus "Franco" in oval cancels including a block of 30 (5x6) of the 1r and 2r values, also a couple of bogus covers, the collection is rounded out with a group of color trials of various colors including red, beige, blue green and others, includes a sheet reconstruction lacking only four positions in blue green, finally some revenue surcharges on Garcia type designs and some forgeries, fine-very fine throughout; Justiniano Garcia was awarded a contract in March of 1863 for producing stamps for the government, he acquired the contract by bidding in auction for the income of the postal service for one year for which he had to supply the stamps and pay a minimum fee of 17,000 pesos, he was the only bidder to offer the minimum, he was awarded a contract for two years at Mr. Garcia's request but in April, a little over a month after the contract was granted it was rescinded, the stamps had been printed, however they remained unissued and none were placed in use; a lovely and scarce collection of these early issues for Bolivia. stamps of Bolivia, two designs were made, one with mountains on the ri1864-65 Riester essay collection consisting of 25 die impressions, the Bolivian Consul in France consulted with Martin Riester in La Havre to produce some proposed designs for stamps of Bolivia, two designs were made, one with mountains on the right in the center illustration and the other with mountains on the left, the latter being considerably scarcer with only three examples in this study, the featured item is a composite proof of the two designs in black signed by Riester which may be unique thus, all are die impressions including five larger size cards with the mountains on the right design, two show a portion of the frame of the other design just as the engraving of that design started, one large size proof shows the scarce design from the right of the composite proof and a stamp size proof on card of that design as well, the rest are the mountains on the right designs of various sizes on different colored papers or in various colors, while very attractive and well done these designs were never adopted, very fine and a lovely study of these essays. 2079 og/nhbl 1867 5c Green Condor full sheet study consisting of fifteen complete unused or mint sheets of 72 plus one reconstruction formed of four fiscal canceled blocks of the original plate, fourth state when it was composed of only 67 positions, beautifully displayed on large double page exhibition pages, the full sheets start with four unused sheets of the original plate, fifth state in various shades and strength of the impression, then sheets of the first and second re-engravings, two of the later, one being on the earlier thicker paper and the other on the scarce thin paper, five sheets of the third engraving which shows first impressions to later worn impressions, and the collection concludes with three of the final fourth re-engraving that include the early impression plus first and second retouches, the exhibition pages are written up in detail identifying the changes of the plate at each stage, except for the used reconstruction and the four unused fifth state sheets, all of the sheets thereafter have original gum and many have a large portion of the stamps never hinged usually being hinged in the corners, some edge faults are present as would be expected affecting some edge and corner stamps as these sheets seldom had sheet selvage of any size larger than a normal stamp margin, overall fine-very fine and quite select; an important sheet collection of the Five Cent Green Condor issue that would be extraordinarily difficult to duplicate.
