Sep. 16" (1870) circular datestamp on cover to whaling ship captain at the Island of Mauritius, sender's blue oval backstamp and manuscript "Via Marseilles" route instructions, red "20" credit handstamp, red London transit (Sep. 29) and "1d" colonial rate handstamp, blue Mauritius receiving backstamp (Dec. 1), repaired at right adding large piece of cover edge and portion of stamp, still a presentable and unique artifact of postal history, this is the only recorded 24c 1869 Pictorial cover to Mauritius, illustrated in the Rose book (p. 139), ex Coulter, with 1986 P.F. certificate, signed Ashbrook (Image)

II used on registered 3c entire, few faults, overall a Fine-Very Fine and desirable group

Transit Aug. 13" backstamp, "6" cents credit handstamp, red London transit and "PD" in circle struck over "6", Calais arrival datestamp, Very Fine example of the elusive Phantom Rate, effective July 1, 1870 the new Anglo-French postal convention reduced the rate between Great Britain and France to 3p per 10 grams, which in turn reduced the Phantom Rate from 12c to 10c (with a corresponding reduction in credit to GB from 8c to 6c), with 1978 P.F. certificate (Image)

12c Green (117). Affixed slightly overlapping 6c Ultramarine (115), tied by target cancels, indistinct town datestamp, red New York Br. Transit backstamp and "8" cents credit datestamp on small 1870 cover to France, Calais entry double-circle datestamp of May 31, slightly reduced at top and missing flap, still Fine and rare 1870 12c Phantom Rate use, following the expiration of the U.S.-France mail treaty on December 31, 1869 the New York postmaster was aware of and sometimes employed an unannounced fully-prepaid rate to France of 12c with 8c credit to England (published in the foreign postage tables for Algeria), the 12c rate applied only until July 1, when it was reduced to 10c, the sender of this cover may have prepaid it for the expired 15c treaty rate (3c overpayment), in any event it was sufficiently prepaid for the 12c rate (Image)
