Dateline on folded letter with small embossed building at left labeled "Congress", to Miss Addie Currier from Director of the Appointment Bureau B.N. Clements, fascinating content relates to South-Western Express Co., discusses their carriage of letters to Mexico and Cuba for $1.00 and to the United States and Europe for $1.25, states letters leaving New Orleans would be examined by a committee appointed by the Louisiana governor, and that the Department has no knowledge of the company, Very Fine and unusual, see the Siegel sale of the Brandon collection for a detailed discussion of the South-Western Express (Sale 1087, lots 561-562) (Image)

3c Rose (65). Tied by "Elmira N.Y. Apr. 12, 1865" double-circle datestamp on orange cover to Butler Ga., clear strike of "MAILS SUSPENDED" handstamp, "Nashville Ten. Jun. 28, 1865" backstamp where auxiliary marking applied, with original contents datelined "Office, Commandant of Prison, Elmira N.Y. April 6th 1865", a reply to an inquiry received about a prisoner, James G. Turner, and states he died of pneumonia after an extended hospital stay and that "he received every attention that could be bestowed on a prisoner of war", signed by Lt. Col. Stephen Moore, cover opened roughly at right (no doubt the recipient was anxious for any news), some soiling, still Very Fine, it was unusual for the commandant to write with news of a prisoner's death, the "Mails Suspended" marking reflected the difficult conditions in sending mail during the last days of the war, ex Brian Green (Image)

Civilian Flag of Truce, Mott-Boswick Correspondence. Comprising 31 covers and 26 letters, most to Hamilton N.Y. but a few the other way to South Carolina, most covers with the stamp either removed or cut-off, a few show where the coin was attached for payment and the examiner's marks or initials, couple with "Per Flag of Truce", many with Old Point Comfort double-circle datestamps, letters with interesting historical content on civilian travel, Fine or better overall, this famous correspondence was highlighted in the Jan-Feb 1984 Confederate Philatelist by Dr. Edward Greenwald in which he states only 41 letters are known to him, therefore this lot contains over half of the known letters

Confederate Governors' Telegrams, 1861-65. Outstanding collection of more than 40 telegrams organized by state plus a few Southern Express or Southern Telegraph Co. telegrams, the vast majority sent by a Confederate governor, a great many to General P. G. T. Beauregard, of these approximately 15 are initialed with handwritten notes by General Beauregard, a few flaws to be found but the main group of 40 are mostly sound or close to sound

VERY FINE. A RARE AND HISTORICAL COLLECTION OF CONFEDERATE STATES GOVERNOR TELEGRAMS, MANY SIGNED AND WITH NOTES BY THE RECIPIENT, GENERAL PIERRE GUSTAVE TOUTANT BEAUREGARD.

The following state governors are included in this collection: Alabama -- Gov. John G. Shorter; Georgia -- Gov. Joseph E. Brown; Louisiana -- Gov. Thomas O. Moore; Mississippi -- Gov. Charles Clark; North Carolina -- Gov. Zebulon B. Vance; South Carolina -- Former Gov. John L. Manning (officer on Beauregard's staff), Gov. Francis W. Pickens, Gov. Andrew G. Magrath; Tennessee -- Gov. Isham G. Harris; Virginia -- Gov. William "Extra Billy" Smith

Also included in the lot is another 39 Confederate telegraphs that are in faulty condition, and a carbon copy of a World War I Armistice telegraph
