Confederate Arkansas Postal History. Approximately 80 covers with Arkansas postal markings during the Confederate period, a few early usages with U.S. 3c 1857's incl. "Searcy Ark. May 28" (1861) spelling error, mostly stampless Paids and Dues but also an excellent selection of General Issues (Nos. 1, 4, 7, 11, 12), handstamped town datestamps incl. Arkadelphia, Camden, Eldorado, Fayetteville, Helena, Hillsboro, Lewisburg, Little Rock, Magnolia, Pine Bluff, Princeton, Van Buren, Washington, some very scarce manuscript towns incl. "3 Creeks" and "Rocky Comfort", some addressed to Arkansas from other places, adversity usages and soldiers' letters, a few Union usages incl. flag-of-truce with U.S. 3c 1861 tied by Fort Smith cds, some related documents and war bond, although the condition reflects typical wartime conditions, overall it is far better than average for Confederate Arkansas, most are exhibit-worthy and attractive, the average value per cover is $100-300, but many were purchased for more than $300 and retain their original descriptions, the nucleus of a significant Confederate Arkansas collection, this lot was purchased in our Sale 927 for $23,000 plus premium and has remained intact since (Image)

Clear Oct. 5 circular datestamp with "Due" and "10" in circle handstamps on 1862 cover to Newmarket, manuscript "By the hands of Colored man, Townsend" at bottom left which has been crossed out, with original enclosure from Dr. Caspar Henkel at Headquarters near Bunker Hill, mentions this Townsend coming back with a horse, Fine, coupled with the fact that Winchester changed hands dozens of times during the war and this cover was mailed with the "colored man" notation marked, we believe he placed this in the mails and made a dash for freedom (Image)
