S.G. #P1 |
S.G. #P1, 1919 35k on 4k Red, the "postal card" surcharge, a very
rare example of the 35k surcharge that was intended to surcharge the 4k
Russian postal cards still in the post offices, however a very few
adhesives were surcharged in a similar manner, and these are only known in
very minute numbers, with this particular example being one of the very few
existing used examples still on its original postal card, quite well
centered, neatly tied by "Batum/7.5.20" double ring c.d.s., additional
clear strike to left, card has been addressed locally, very fine; signed
numerous times, including Peter Holcombe, and accompanied by his 1994
certificate; the price quoted in the Stanley Gibbons catalog is for stamps
found off cover, and "examples used on postcard are worth more." (Scott
#11; unpriced used). |
off card £3,250

S.G. #P2 |
S.G. #P2, 1919 35k on 4k Carmine red Romanov issue,
the "postal card" surcharge, an extremely desirable unused example of
this stamp, with a total of only 46 issued, this is the rarest of all
the elusive issues of Batum, this surcharge was originally intended to
be applied to only postal cards, however a limited number of the 4k Romanov
adhesive issues were similarly surcharged and placed on postal cards, and
only three or four used copies are known, the rest were mostly peeled off
of the original postal card, hence the reason why all unused examples are
found without gum, minor gum staining as typically found, wonderfully well
centered, very fine; one of the great British rarities of the region;
signed numerous times, including Peter Holcombe and accompanied by his 1994
certificate (Scott #12; $6,500.00).
