1398 image1914 “SS EMPRESS of IRELAND” SALVAGED LETTER, cover from Vancouver dated MAY22-1914 and addressed to England, routing via Montreal and the CPR Empress of Ireland, struck by the Norwegian MV Storstad on MAY29-1914 as it passed Rimouski-Que, the Empress sank in only 14 minutes with the loss of 1012 of the 1477 passengers and crew on board, this was the worst Canadian maritime disaster in peacetime history with only 4 of the 138 children on board surviving, the ship was located in 40 meters of water and divers salvaged most of the mail, the waterlogged mail was set to the Ottawa Branch Dead Letter Office where it was dried and forwarded to the addressee with a Recovered by divers h/s applied, cover contains the original letter and two Ottawa DLO b/s on OCT 3rd and DEC 16th, VF est ($200+ US) (Image) C$300+
