Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc. Sale - 958

2008 Rarities of the World - June 7, 2008

The 2008 Rarities of the World sale continues the Siegel firm's annual custom of presenting many outstanding stamps and covers in one spectacular auction. This year, the sale offers unusual covers from the Erin Gunter Estate and a Midwestern collector, including Louisiana usages and rare Confederates. A newly-discovered 5c 1847 Wheeling Grid cover is offered to the market for the first time. Rare and superb stamps will be found throughout, including a Scott #9 graded Mint NH Gem 100 Jumbo by PSE (the only unused stamp prior to 212 to achieve the zenith of grades). Scott 5 (Position 7R1E) is represented by a single offered for the first time at auction and two covers with strips containing this major rarity. Invert errors include a block of the 1c Pan-American, a single 1c graded XF 90 and, remarkably, a 4c Pan-American Invert with a new PSE certificate graded XF 90 (the finest graded example). To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Inverted “Jenny”, Position 21 will be offered. Finally, there is an extensive section of BNA postal history rarities.

The Rarities sale will be held on Saturday, June 7, following the June 5-6 sale of the Islander collection of South America. The three days should generate millions of dollars in sales of many world-class rarities, including the legendary “Pack Strip” of Brazil.
