VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING SET OF 1871 SERIES PROOFS COMBINING THE NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY'S FRAMES AND BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING'S VIGNETTES. PROBABLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE.
A remarkable aspect of the 1871 Series of Beer Stamps is the combination of private and government printing to produce the complete design for each value. As this set displays, the vignettes were engraved and printed at the BEP, while the frames were engraved and printed by National. Each component carries an imprint. (Image)
VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE BICOLORED DIE ESSAY FOR THE 1875 SERIES 50-CENT HALF-BARREL BEER STAMP.
The frame of this essay was printed first from a typographic plate. The vignette was then printed from the engraved die, causing slight die sinkage around the edges.
"H. W. Holcombe" and "E. L. Green" backstamps, pencil source note "Burger 1-18-17" (Image)
