Tied by well-struck violet Medellin oval ribbon handstamp, used with National 3c tied by lightly struck blue Dec. 20, 1920 circular duplex datestamp on cover to Cartagena, also with "CIA Colombiana de Navegacion Aerea" oval promotional label tied by both cancels, blue boxed Cartagena Dec. 25 arrival datestamp, cover reduced at left and slightly at bottom and slight gum adhesive affecting 20c

FINE AND IMMENSELY RARE COVER OF THE 20-CENTAVOS SURCHARGE, SCOTT NO. C11F AND SANABRIA NO. 26 - FLOWN ON THE CRASHED RETURNED FLIGHT OF THE "MEDELLIN". ONLY THREE COVERS HAVE BEEN RECORDED. A MAJOR COLOMBIAN AIR POST RARITY.

Few typewritten surcharged covers have survived as they were used on the return flight of the Medellin from Medellin to Cartagena via Puerto Berrio. The plane ran out of fuel on the way to Puerto Berrio and ultimately crashed and was destroyed. Most mail was lost but the pilot Bazin managed to salvage some covers and canoed back to Medellin where they were subsequently sent by surface mail for onward delivery.

We have located only three covers with the 20c Surcharge: a) with promotional label, ex Neubuger and Johnson, b) with promotional label, the example offered here, and c) with unsurcharged 10c, ex Gebauer

Signed Champion. With 1988 E. Diena certificate (Image)
