VERY FINE. AN IMPORTANT SHOWPIECE MULTIPLE OF THE "RAINBOW" COLOR TRIAL WITH EXPERIMENTAL CANCEL REMOVAL BY PERKINS, BACON & CO.
Various techniques were used by Perkins, Bacon & Co. in an attempt to remove cancels. Different types of cancels were used including Maltese Cross and various handstamps, both in black and color. Combinations of tartaric, turpentine, creosote and prussic (hydrogen cyanide) acids were used in the attempted removals. This particular example was treated with chlorate of lime (causing erosion of stamps), permanganate of potash and turpentine. (Image)

VERY FINE. A RARELY ENCOUNTERED "RAINBOW" COLOR TRIAL WITH EXPERIMENTAL MALTESE CROSS CANCEL AND TRIAL DEFACEMENT.
This type of Maltese Cross cancel is known to be used by Rowland Hill and John Ledingham at 11 Downing Street. These were done to test the various methods by which stamps could be cleaned and illegally reused. This particular example is in above average condition with a particularly choice strike of the Maltese Cross.
