FINE AND EXCEPTIONALLY RARE PENNY BLACK FROM PLATE 9 TIED BY THE POULTON PENNY POST CANCEL WITHOUT THE MALTESE CROSS.

While any Poulton Penny Post cancel on a Penny Black is rare, on or off cover, these typically are found used in combination with a Maltese Cross cancel. Those without the Maltese Cross cancel, such as the example offered here, are major rarities as highlighted by the difference in catalogue value listed in the SG Specialised.
