1083 c ImageGREAT BRITAIN, 1840, 1p Black (1; SG 2; SG Specialised AS46). Block of four, plate 8, lettered M-A to N-B, mostly full margins all around except just touched at top left, each cancelled and tied by red Maltese Cross cancels on folded letter to Edinburgh, Lombard Street Nov. 21, 1840 despatch and Edinburgh arrival datestamps on top flap, block is slightly toned, light file fold just affects right vertical pair, cover with few mended tears of little consequence

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ENORMOSLY RARE ONE-PENNY BLACK BLOCK OF FOUR USED ON COVER. ONLY A SMALL HANDFUL ARE THOUGHT TO EXIST.

After a review of major Great Britain collections, a block of four on cover is often missing from even the most advanced collections. Due to the nature of a cover requiring a block, covers and their stamps often have some degree of faults with this in very presentable condition, perfectly suitable for exhibiting.

With 2019 B.P.A. certificate. The SG Specialised value for a used block of off-cover alone is £32,000 (Image)
