Canal Zone and Hawaii
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2191 nh Image1962, 4c Thatcher Ferry Bridge, Silver (Bridge) Omitted (157a). Position 28, Mint N.H., choice centering, bright and fresh

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE THATCHER FERRY BRIDGE ERROR. ONLY ONE PANE OF 50 WAS EVER ISSUED.

According to Canal Zone Stamps, one sheet, consisting of four panes of 50, was printed. Three panes were caught by postal authorities, while the fourth pane of 50 was sent to H. E. Harris & Co. as part of a larger order from the Canal Zone Philatelic Agency. At the same time this error was printed, the U.S. had issued the Dag Hammarskjold error in huge quantities. The Canal Zone authorities made plans to do the same, but were successfully sued by H. E. Harris, and the larger printing never took place. Two of the three other panes were laminated and presented to the National Postal Museum. The third was destroyed. The one pane available was broken up in 1969.

With 1982 P.F. certificate (Image)

2192° nh ImageHAWAII, 1893, 10c Red Brown, Red Overprint Error (61B). Mint N.H. with part bottom imprint selvage, radiant color, well-centered for this difficult issue

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE FINEST OF ONLY TWO MINT NEVER-HINGED SINGLES OF THE 1893 10-CENT RED OVERPRINT ERROR WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS. ONLY ONE SHEET OF FIFTY WAS ISSUED.

Two errors of the 1893 Provisional Government Overprint Issues were made. One sheet of the 10c Red Brown, normally overprinted in black, was overprinted in red (Scott 61B). One sheet of the 6c Green, normally overprinted in red, was overprinted in black (Scott 66C). According to an affidavit by Louis T. Kenake, clerk of the Stamp Division of the Republic of Hawaii, the 10c sheet was issued to the postmaster at Kahuka, Oahu (Meyer-Harris, p. 240). The 6c sheet was purchased by Postmaster Jos. M. Oat and sometime around 1901 most of it was sold to dealer J. H. Makins, probably on behalf of Henry J. Crocker. The San Francisco earthquake is said to have destroyed a number of examples of both the overprint errors.

Ex Ostheimer, Tows and Honolulu Advertiser as a strip of five. This is one of two Mint N.H. stamps from the strip (position 2 was also Mint N.H.). They are the only two Mint N.H. copies we have been able to locate. Raymond Weill purple backstamp on selvage. 1996 P.F. certificate for strip no longer accompanies. With 2019 P.S.E. certificate (Image)
