1636 c Image"Manassas Junction, Company B, 7th Regiment Louisiana Vol." Docketing or endorsement on back of cover addressed to Baton Rouge La. with red and blue 12-Star Confederate Flag, Cannon, Five-Point Star, Verse and "Remember Sumter, Bethel and Manassas" Slogan Patriotic design (CN-2 var., Verse 35, Slogan 63), soldier's endorsement at top from a member of the 7th Regt., Louisiana Volunteers (the "Pelican" Regiment), and pencil "10" apparent rate but no postmark, accompanied by original enclosure, a lettersheet with 12-Star Confederate Flag, Cannon and Verse design (CN-1C, Verse 39), Starke & Cordozo imprint, datelined Sep. 5, 1861, interesting contents related to battle and "Yankees within 14 miles", cover with some minor soiling

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND VERY RARE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH THE STAR ABOVE THE CANNON AND FLAG AND "REMEMBER SUMTER, BETHEL AND MANASSAS" SLOGAN.

Of the various Flag and Cannon Patriotic designs, this is one of the rarest -- particularly with the large five-point star above the flag. The C.S.A. catalog lists this design only with 11 stars and does not depict it with the large star above, nor mention it in the description of varieties. The 12th star here, at the upper right of the flag, is more of a blob than a star but it is prominent enough that we regard it as a 12th star. In reality, this design should have been assigned its own catalog number.

The firm of Starke & Cordozo was based in Richmond, Virginia. They produced a variety of patriotic envelopes and lettersheets during the Civil War. Although this cover does not have their imprint, the presence of the lettersheet with the Starke & Cordozo imprint suggests that that both came from them.

VERY FINE AND SCARCE EXAMPLE OF THIS 11-STAR FLAG AND CANNON CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGN USED FROM CONFEDERATE-OCCUPIED KENTUCKY.

Of the various Flag and Cannon Patriotic designs, the 11-Star CN-2 is one of the rarest.

1640 c ImageOrange, Texas. Cover addressed to Col. John Rockwood in Orange Tex., endorsed "POB Free Thos. Edgar, Chf of Orange Bureau" with blue 11-Star Confederate Flag, Cannon and Verse Patriotic design (CN-7, Verse 39), back and flap tear extends to top right corner on front

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST CONFEDERATE FLAG AND CANNON PATRIOTIC DESIGNS AND A REMARKABLE POST OFFICE BUSINESS USE WITHIN TEXAS.

This cannon design, while firing left like most of the others, has distinctive differences, particularly in the smoke at left and right. This is likely a unique use of this design within Texas.

Illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 104 with the statement "one reported", though the C.S.A. Catalog illustrates another example (Image)
