VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 ONE-CENT BLUE NUMERAL ISSUE WITH CONTRASTING BRIGHT RED CANCELLATION.

Ex Honolulu Advertiser and Twigg-Smith. With 1996 P.F. certificate. The Scott Catalogue does not assign a premium for handstamped red cancels, but such examples are valued by Hawaiian specialists much more than typical pen-cancelled stamps (Image)

1023   Image1859, 1c Light Blue, "1 Ce" Omitted (12a). Plate 2-B, Type X (Westerberg Position 2), margins to cut in along frameline at top right, manuscript "X" cancel, letters at bottom almost completely omitted -- much more is missing than just "1 Ce" as listed in Scott -- part of "Inter" at top also printed faintly if at all, few faults including tear at top left, thin spot at center, erosion in cancel and toned

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 ONE-CENT BLUE HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ISSUE WITH DENOMINATION MISSING AT BOTTOM. ONLY TWO ARE RECORDED. ONE OF THE GREATEST HAWAIIAN NUMERAL RARITIES.

Only two examples of the 1859 1c Blue Numeral are known with the "1 Ce" missing. The other, Type VIII from Position 4 (the position below this one), was last offered in our 1995 Honolulu Advertiser sale where it was described as possibly unique. It has similar margins and cancel as the example offered here, but the letters "nt." of "Cent." and the "Inter Island" label at top are clearly printed. Type X from Plate 2-B is rare in and of itself -- it is the only position on the plate lacking an illustration in the Westerberg book.
