1246   Image1863, 2c Black, Blue Gray (18 var). Plate 3-C, Type VIII (Westerberg Position 8), raised "IN" of "INTER", full even margins, crisp and dark impression, cancelled by red "POSTAGE PAID" in oval handstamp, filled thin and sealed tear

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS APPEARS TO US TO BE A 2-CENT NUMERAL PRINTING ON BLUE GRAY PAPER, BUT IT COMES FROM PLATE 3-C.

This stamp is somewhat of a mystery. Its plating characteristics clearly match Plate 3-C, Type VIII (Position 8) -- see lot 1200 for an example -- but the paper is apparently Blue Gray, which is only associated with Plate 5-A. We are not sure if our classification of this stamp as Scott 18, on Blue Gray paper, is correct; therefore, it is offered subject to certification after review by Hawaiian Numeral Issue specialists. If our plating and paper identification is correct, this might represent a new discovery of a Blue Gray stamp printed from a plate other than 5-A (Image)

1247   Image1863, 2c Black, Blue Gray (18). Plate 5-A, Type III (Westerberg Position 3), large even margins, fine impression on deeply blued paper, used with United States 1863 2c Black (73), tiny corner crease not mentioned on accompanying certificate, both stamps tied by a single strike of "San Francisco Cal. Jul. 9, 1863" double-circle datestamp on a large piece of craft paper undoubtedly cut from a newspaper wrapper, carried on the American Bark Onward, which cleared Honolulu on June 18, 1864, and arrived in San Francisco on July 9, carrying 818 letters (Gregory, Hawaiian Foreign Mail p. 309)

EXTREMELY FINE AND A MOST REMARKABLE PIECE, SHOWING THE PROPER MIXED FRANKING FOR THE PRINTED-MATTER RATE, FRANKED WITH ONE OF THE RAREST NUMERAL ISSUES IN USED CONDITION AND THE UNITED STATES 2-CENT BLACK JACK.

From July 1863 the United States postage for printed matter (open circulars, newspapers, etc.) was 2c. The rate from Hawaii remained at 2c. In this instance, we have a large part of a newspaper wrapper, franked with the correct combination of 2c U.S. and 2c Hawaiian postage. The 1863 2c Black on Gray Blue Numeral is scarce unused and extremely rare in used condition. We know of only one example on a complete cover, used by itself and offered as lot 1248 in this sale. The mixed franking for this rate is unique within the entire Numeral Issue.

1248 c Image1863, 2c Black, Blue Gray (18). Plate 5-A, Type VI (Westerberg Position 6), full margins to clear, tied by 9-bar square grid cancel on buff cover to Grinbaum & Co. at Honolulu, slightly reduced at left, stamp with scattered toned spots, cover with vertical file folds not affecting stamp and some wear including scotch tape stains

FINE APPEARANCE. THE 1863 2-CENT BLACK FIFTH-SETTING NUMERAL ISSUE ON BLUE GRAY PAPER IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL NUMERAL ISSUES ON COVER. A SEARCH OF MAJOR NAME SALES FAILED TO LOCATE EVEN ONE OTHER COVER.

A search of major name sale catalogues, including Tows, Admiral Harris, Crocker, Caspary, Ishikawa, Honolulu Advertiser, Pietsch, Aall and Twigg-Smith, failed to produce another example of the Fifth-Setting 2c on Bluish Gray paper (Scott 18) on cover.
