1867-68 Grilled Issue and 1875 Re-Issue (Scott 79-111)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
192   Image3c Rose, A. Grill (79). Horizontal pair, clearly-defined grill with perfs far more intact than normally seen, tied by "Cairo Ill. Aug. 23" circular datestamp and quartered cork cancel on small orange piece, rich color, choice centering

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE PAIR OF THE 1867 3-CENT A GRILL.

The 3c stamps issued in August 1867 with experimental Type A grills were the first of the 1867-68 grills. They were soon replaced by other grill types, because the grilling all over weakened the sheets and resulted in poor separations with perforations or pieces torn out. Multiples are scarce, especially in such choice condition. This pair has perf teeth almost all around with only one short perf at bottom of right stamp and two small nicks at top of left stamp.

197° ng Image3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Unused (no gum), clearly-defined grill, brilliant color

VERY FINE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 3-CENT Z GRILL.

The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed thru the Z Grill, which accounts for the rarity of surviving examples, especially in unused condition.

200 og Image5c Brown, F. Grill, Very Thin Paper (95 var). Original gum, lightly hinged, clearly-defined grill, deep rich color and proof-like impression

VERY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL ON VERY THIN PAPER.

The National Bank Note Co. undoubtedly made various attempts to improve grilling quality and efficiency through modifications in the process. Based on surviving stamps, it appears that one modification involved the use of very thin paper, which probably allowed two or more sheets to be grilled in one pass through the grilling device. The 1c (F), 2c (E and F), 3c (E and F), 5c (F), 10c (F), 12c (F) and 15c (F) are found on this very thin paper. They are scarce, particularly the 5c-15c values.
