Bold strike of circular datestamp with matching "FREE" handstamp on buff cover addressed to the postmaster at Glymphville S.C., sent by postmaster Alfred Huger, missing part of top flap, Very Fine Confederate State use on the day U.S. post office operations in the South were terminated and the day before the Confederate postal system was inaugurated, this is the only recorded example of the Charleston handstamped "FREE" marking used in the Confederacy (Image)

445 c ImageAbbeville S.C. Apr. 15 (1861). Circular datestamp cancels 3c Red on Buff Star Die entire (U27) to Charleston and forwarded back to Abbeville, bold "Charleston S.C. Apr. 26" double-circle datestamp struck twice, matching "ADVERTISED/ONE CENT" boxed handstamp, red crayon "For 3" rating, reduced at left, missing part of top flap, minor wear, Very Fine, very unusual and scarce use, accompanied by copy of the Charleston Courier showing the name advertised in the paper, the postmaster must have been notified that the recipient had gone back to Abbeville, this is the only reported Confederate State use of this auxiliary marking (Image)
