United States and Confederate States Postal History continued...

Cuban Mails, Shipwreck Covers, San Francisco Earthquake continued...

1297 c Image1862, "Saved from the wreck/of the Colombo". Two-line framed handstamp boldly struck tying New Zealand, 1861, 1p Orange-Vermilion (11; SG 33), lifted and hinged in place, oval grid cancel, on cover with "Auckland New-Zealand SP 30 1862 B" backstamp, to Calne, Kent, England, red London Paid datestamp and Calne receiving backstamp (both dated Dec. 27, 1862), two additional stamps missing with pencil note "Keep C. Tebay no Stp here C.T." in the hand of Mrs. Charlotte Tebay, the first lady member of the London Philatelic Society (now the Royal), minor stains and faults as always for this shipwreck mail, the Peninsular & Oriental Line's Colombo left Galle in Ceylon on Nov. 18, 1862, and at 4 a.m. on Nov. 19 in torrential rain she struck on Minicoy Island (the southernmost of the Laccadives in the Indian Ocean) and became a total loss, this Dec. 27 postmark date is early since most of the mail was submerged and not salvaged until three months after the wreck, this is also an extremely rare cover with an intact stamp (tied by the recovery marking), ex Krichauff, Kaye and Hackmey (Image)

Printed label, second type, on back of soiled and water-damaged cover with corner card from Italy, stamp washed off, blue "Franco Guaymas Jul. 20, 1886" octagonal datestamp applied on arrival in Mexico, the Cunarder Oregon was lost off Fire Island on Mar. 14, 1886, the 896 passengers and crew survived, 464 bags of mail were recovered after washing up on the coast from Portland to Cape Hatteras, five examples of this second type of label reported (Image)
