Mar. 16" transit circular datestamp and endorsed "Per Str Quaker City via Mobile", Very Fine, this is reported to be the earlier of the two recorded examples of this Mobile steamship marking (Image)

1858, "Saved from the wreck/of the Ava". Two-line script handstamp on back of folded cover from India to Dudley Mass., originated with "Madura 1858 FE 9" datestamp on back, "India Paid" in crescent frame handstamp, sender's notation "Overland via Southampton, 4 annas paid to London by stamps", area along top and small parts of diamond grid cancels show where stamps washed off (four one-anna?), "Madras 1858 FE 13" backstamp applied before departure, "Too Late" in scroll handstamp and London transit datestamp (May 11) on back, "N. York Am. Pkt. 21 May 24" debit datestamp, crossed out and rated "12" due, usual faults for a shipwreck cover, still Fine, very scarce, the Peninsular & Oriental Line's Ava left Calcutta on Feb. 10, 1858, with British military officers on board, she stopped at Madras to pick up a cargo of treasure, on Feb. 16 off the coast of Ceylon she struck rocks and sank after the passengers were safely unloaded, the specie and mail were later recovered (Image)
