3058 c ImageNEWFOUNDLAND, 1919, 3c Red Brown, Hawker Air Post (C1, SG 142). Well-centered, tied by "St. John's Nfld Apr. 12, 1919 2-PM" postmark on cover to London, England, manuscript "per Aeroplane", Official Seal on back, cover with tiny pinholes are left and small tear at bottom (both are trivial and not noted on certificate)

VERY FINE. AN UNUSUALLY FRESH AND CHOICE HAWKER FLIGHT COVER.

Postmaster J. A. Robinson of St. John's overprinted 200 stamps, of which only 95 were used. The plane was forced down at sea due to a defect in the cooling system after covering only 1,100 miles. The mail bag was immersed, and some of the stamps were washed off of the covers and replaced at a later date. This cover is remarkable for its freshness.

Sep 25 1930" machine cancel on cover to London, England, typed "Per Air Mail 'Columbia' Hr. Grace to London Eng. September 1930", neat "Harbour Grace Newf'd OC 9 30" backstamp, well-centered, certificate mentions two minute interior faults affecting stamp, cover signed by navigator Harry Connor, with original letter addressed to the postmaster in London asking to return the cover back to Newfoundland

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY 65 PIECES OF MAIL WITH THE SPECIALLY SURCHARGED STAMP WERE CARRIED FROM ST. JOHN'S. A GREAT RARITY.

The Newfoundland government overprinted 300 copies of the 36c "Caribou" issue for use on this flight. Only 100 were actually used: 65 from St. John's and 35 from Harbour Grace. After flying 2,650 miles, the plane was forced down at Tresco Island, off the coast of England. The "Columbia" was able to finish the flight, landing at Croydon Airport on October 13.
