VERY FINE. A PHENOMENAL FRANCE AIR POST RARITY. ONLY TWO COVERS ARE KNOWN WITH THE INVERTED ILE DE FRANCE 10-FRANC ON 90-CENTIME SURCHARGE.

The provisional surcharges were created during an attempt to create a new service to expedite mail crossing the Atlantic. This was accomplished using a combination of boat and plane to transport the mail. The mail was placed on board the ship, and a plane would take off from the ship at a predetermined point. This new Catapult Mail service gained about 24 hours, as mail on board ships had to wait for the ship to dock and then be removed. The "Ile de France" provisionals were created due to the popularity of the first leg of the voyage. Realizing that the ship would not have sufficient postage on board for the return voyage, the French Consul General in New York commissioned Emile Cabella, a New York printer, to surcharge 3,000 90c and 1,000 1.50fr stamps. News of the stamps reached France before the plane arrived and they were instantly sought by collectors.

Only 50 stamps were printed with the inverted surcharge. Of those, 45 have normal spacing, as seen on the example offered here. Only two covers with inverted surcharges are known to exist.
