The David Golden Collection of Hawaiian Stamps and Postal History continued...

Numeral Issue (5c Blue on Blue, Scott 21)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
484° ogbl Image1865, 5c Blue on Blue, "Hawaiian Postage" (21). Plate 9-A, Types VII-VIII/V-VI-V/III-IV-III/I-II-I (Westerberg Positions 3-4/5-6-5/7-8-7/9-10-9), inter-pane block of eleven, original gum, large margins, light creasing mostly caused by naturally crackly gum, top right stamp small thin spot

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE INTER-PANE MULTIPLE OF THE 1865 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" ISSUE, CONTAINING EIGHT OF THE TEN STAMPS IN THE PANE AT LEFT AND THREE STAMPS FROM THE ADJOINING PANE AT RIGHT. WE KNOW OF ONLY THREE UNUSED BLOCKS OF THIS ISSUE.

Unused multiples of the 1865 5c "Hawaiian Postage" Numeral (Scott 21) are significantly rarer than multiples of the 5c "Interisland" (Scott 22). A search of name sales produced three unused blocks: 1) the only recorded complete pane of ten, ex Ferrary, Harris, Ostheimer and Honolulu Advertiser, 2) the block of eleven offered here, ex Tows, and 3) the only recorded tete-beche block of four, ex Ferrary, Tows and Honolulu Advertiser. It is telling that no blocks were present in the collections formed by Caspary, Ishikawa and Pietsch.

Ex Tows. Scott Retail as two blocks of four and three singles with no premium for the inter-pane multiple. (Image)

491° c Image1865, 5c Blue on Blue, "Hawaiian Postage" (21). Plate 9-A, Types VI, V and IV (Westerberg Positions 6, 5 and 8), three singles, large margins to just in, top stamp light crease at upper left, tied by square grids, edge of cancelling device causing slight indentations on center stamp, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Jan. 7" (1866) circular datestamp with day slug inverted (possibly used as a "1") on oversize cloth-lined cover to James F. Hunnewell in Boston, used with United States 1861-63 3c Rose (65, two) and 5c Brown (76), tied by target cancels, "San Francisco Cal. Jan. 29" double-circle datestamp, slightly reduced at right, some overall cover wear slightly affects 3c stamps (one with corner off)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE FINER OF TWO RECORDED COVERS BEARING THREE OF THE 1865 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" NUMERAL ISSUE. AN IMPRESSIVE COVER.

The triple 5c Hawaiian rate is paid by the three 5c "Hawaiian Postage" Numeral stamps, and the triple U.S. rate (3 x 3c = 9c plus 2c ship fee, total 11c) is paid by U.S. 1861-63 3c and 5c stamps. 492° c Image1865, 5c Blue on Blue, "Hawaiian Postage" (21). Plate 9-A, Types IX-X in pair and single of Type IV (Westerberg Positions 1-2 and 8), large margins to just in, scissors-cut at bottom between stamps of pair, tied by square grids, used with United States 1861-63 3c Rose (65) and 5c Brown (76), tied by cogwheel cancels on cover to Killingworth Conn., red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Mar. 22" (1866) and "San Francisco Cal. FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED PAIRS OF THE 1865 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" NUMERAL ON COVER.

This cover was carried on the bark D. C. Murray, which departed Honolulu on March 22, 1866, and arrived in San Francisco on April 13. The Hawaiian stamps apparently pay the triple 5c rate, but the U.S. stamps pay the double rate plus ship fee (6c plus 2c). The other recorded 5c "Hawaiian Postage" pair on cover was offered in our sale of the Honolulu Advertiser collection. It has the same U.S. postage.
