Parcel Post, 1913, 1¢ carmine rose (Scott Q1), First Day, 1st Class Usage, Front Royal, VA, horizontal pair, straight edges at top, tied by a July 1, 1913 Front Royal, Va. duplex cancel on a cover to Virginia Beach, Va.; reduced at left removing about a quarter of the right stamp, the left stamp also slightly damaged, otherwise Fine. A very rare use of Parcel Post stamps on a cover to foreign destination on the first day of their validity for regular postage., with 1990 P.F. certificate.

Parcel Post, 1913, 5¢ carmine rose (Scott Q5), First Day, Parcel Post Usage, Bay City, MI, 5¢ tied by three strikes of a "Bay City, Mich." double oval handstamp on large piece of a gray parcel wrapper, apx 10" x 15", since folded down to envelope size; from a E.E. Gudschinsky to Mrs. E.E. Gudschinsky; attached to the back of the wrapper is a small newspaper clipping from the Bay City Tribune of Jan 3, 1913, reading "Gets First Package. Mrs. Edward Cudschinsky [sic], of Fourth street, was the first person to receive a parcel post package delivered in Bay City. The package was delivered on New Year's Day." Also included is a photocopy of the full page of the Tribune, as well as a 4-page Post Office Department leaflet entitled "Parcel Post Information".

Clerk & 4¢ Rural Carrier (Scott Q4, Q1), First Day, Geneseo, NY, a single of each tied by January 1, 1913 Genneseo, N.Y. duplex and by faint boxed "GENNESEO/ N.Y." parcel cancel on a locally addressed cover created by the same Harold W. Flansburgh as the preceding cover; 4¢ with a tiny sealed tear at bottom, undoubtedly pre-use, Very Fine, Ex-Dr. Martin and considered one of the highlights of his back-of-book collection, realized $16,500.

Parcel Post, 1913, 1¢, 2¢, 4¢-25¢ & 75¢ (Scott Q1, Q2, Q4-Q9, Q11), First Day, Los Angeles, CA, each canceled by "Los Angeles, Cal." on part of a large piece of a brown parcel wrapper postmarked with a clear January 1, 1913, Los Angeles duplex;; the 1¢, 2¢, 4¢, 15¢ & 75¢ all have straight edges and the piece, which measures approximately 14" x 7", has some edge flaws and has been folded in half, F-VF.

The sender/recipient of the parcel, E.J. Louis, has affixed a notarized affidavit, sworn on Jan 2, 1913, "For the purposes of perpetuating the…history of the annexed PARCEL POST STAMPS…", testifying that he purchased the nine affixed stamps on January 1, and that the parcel was delivered to him on the same day "by SPECIAL MESSENGER". The affidavit also indicates that Louis purchased the other three values of the set, as well, but he apparently didn't feel the need to affix them to the package.

AN INTRIGUING AND COMPLETELY UNIQUE USE OF PARCEL POST STAMPS FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE ON THEIR DAY OF ISSUE, WHICH WAS ALSO THE FIRST DAY OF PARCEL POST SERVICE.

On January 1, 1913, second class and third class mails were combined with fourth class mail into a new Parcel Post system and special Parcel Post stamps were issued. It wasn't until July 1 of that year that the Parcel Post stamps were authorized for use on First Class mail. (Image)
