1912-1929 King George V Issues continued...
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
1281 E 108 var. image1918, King George V "Admiral", 3¢ large size reversed impression in green (Scott 108 var.), horizontal pair, the right sheet margin stamp only partially printed, as always, large margins, fresh and Very Fine.
Estimate $100 - 150

These were produced in 1929 by the German printing firm of Herbst & Illig as a sample for the American Bank Note Co. in hopes of selling ABNCo. on the benefits of photogravure printing. The printing plates were produced from a line drawing based on a sheet of 3¢ Admirals that ABNCo. had provided to Herbst & Illig. The finished plates contained 90 subjects, nine columns wide by ten rows high. The ninth column is always truncated due to the insufficient width of the printing plate. The "stamps" were printed in carmine, blue, green and black. It is not known how many of each color were produced, only that at least one sheet of each color was sent to ABNCo. sometime in 1930.

The source of this information is a very interesting article by Charles Neyhart entitled "The 'Backward' Admiral" that appeared in the July-August 2013 issue of the Northwest Philatelic Library's
