Germany After 1945
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
308 /o   imageGermany: Local Issues, Collection, 1944-45, Mint and Used. More than 1200 German stamps, mostly Hitler heads, with Hitler's likeness blacked-out using a variety of devices. This collection was purchased as a unit by the consignor. It was originally acquired sometime after World War II by a New York stamp dealer, from a German youth, whom the dealer found trying to it at stamp markets in New York City. The young man, as he related his story to the dealer, had been a motorcycle courier in eastern France during the war. After France was liberated, in August of 1944, post offices were depleted of French stamps, so the locals used blacked-out Hitler head stamps, obliterating Hitler's likeness. In whatever city, town or village the youth found himself, he had Hitler stamps "canceled", mainly with cork, but also with a variety of improvised devices, such as belt buckles, pins with designs, rings, etc. The dealer eventually bought the young man's entire holding, which had been stored in envelopes, many identified by the town in which the stamps had been "canceled". As a result, about half of the stamps are so identified. Stamps are both mint & used, an interesting lot, and an intriguing story. Inspection invited, Fine to Very Fine.
