Well over 500 covers, includes many premium examples with some duplication such as: arrowheads; crossroads; garden paths all types including new discovery type; open triangles and wedges of four; circle of eight triangles, emblem design; Maltese cross a new type; various geometrics; man with derby; four petal flower with veins; four leaf clovers; flowers and shamrocks; pumpkin; circular and oval grids; circular grills; heart with arrow pointing; four hearts; circle of hearts; heart; negative letters "W" in many forms; elm leaf; holly sprig; leaf; maple leaf; six petaled leaf; eight petaled leaf; ten petaled leaf; small veined leaf; stylized leaf; negative numerals; 100; mortar and pestle; rosette with seven and eight and more segments; shields; starts; negative stars; this is by far one of the most comprehensive studies undertaken of this storied historical town relating to the most renowned period of fancy cancels. A few faults here and there but overall nice, retail of this would exceed by multiples of our estimate, not taking into account the time spent corralling this material and the endless hours of research devoted to identifying and includes newly identified items, generally Fine to Very Fine.

1583   imageU.S., Wisconsin, Philo Correspondence, 1828-69. Neatly mounted collection showing the life of George Washington Philo, an ordained minister from Canada who moved to Wisconsin, through documents, folded letters and land deeds; Philo moved to Wisconsin Territory in the late 1830's and there are several territorial letters with postmarks including 1839 letter from Jefferson to Madison without postmarks, 1840 Waddington, Milwaukee and manuscript Aztalan; circa 1843 Milwaukee, 1843 Mineral Point and Summit (manuscript Postmaster's free frank) and 1844 Green Bay. There are 7 non-Wisconsin covers, plus the bottom half of Philo's ordination certificate, his marriage certificate, an 1849 four page letter without postmarks, an 1869 cover with 3¢ ultramarine and seven land deeds. The letters have been transcribed and neatly typed for reading. A wonderful lot for the historian, Fine.
