applied alongside for double the 5c inland delivery charge, no arrival marking, a few minor blemishes. Ex Dale Forster & John Barwis. Carried by rail to Sydney, by Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co 'City of New York' to San Francisco, and by
trans-continental railway to the East Coast. The item was paid at double the 6d per ½oz USA-New South Wales treaty rate, but as Victoria was not party to the 'paid to destination' treaty, inland charges were applied. Not listed in Ben Palmer's

rate and taxed with Melbourne 'T'-in-inverted-triangle cachet, partial 'MALTA/JY 5/83' duplex cancel on the face where fair 'PURIFIE AU LAZARET / MALTE' handstamp in blue applied alongside two 25mm fumigation slits, on arrival Italy Postage Dues 10c
orange & red affixed on the face tied by '5A/DIST/8/LUG' oval datestamps largely clear of the other markings, a couple of minor blemishes. Ex Trevor Davis & John Barwis. Carried by P&O steamer 'Carthage' to Colombo, 'Clyde' to Suez, overland to

'1' killer and 'REGISTERED/MELBOURNE' double-oval datestamp alongside, very fine bold complete 'REGISTERED/MAR 27 1888/ SAN FRANCISCO' unboxed datestamp in rosine on the reverse, no arrival marking, some edge faults & small-part back flap missing not
affecting the stamps or markings. Ex John Barwis. Carried by 'Konoowarra' departing Melbourne 21.2.1888 and by Union Steamship Co (New Zealand) 'Mariposa' departing Sydney 22.2.1888, then by rail to Florida. The rate was 6d per ½oz ship letter plus

"7" /MORE TO PAY' oval cachet and on arrival with 'U.S. CHARGE/TO COLLECT "7" CENTS' handstamp, San Francisco 'APR/17' transit and New York '4-.22.91' arrival backstamps, minor blemishes. Ex John Barwis. The Australian Colonies were supposed to join
the UPU on 1.1.1891, and notices were promulgated and 2½d stamps issued for the UPU foreign letter rate. However, the official joining date was delayed until 1.10.1891, and items posted at the UPU rates were taxed. Due to the confusion, some

Brindisi 29.10.1893 and presumably onwards by rail directly from there. The village of Kovalovicich was part of the township of Kojetin, Moravia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire; today part of the Brno County in the Czech Republic. The rate was 2½d UPU
