A REMARKABLE MIXED FRANKING COMBINATION OF THE HAWAIIAN 1853 13¢ KAMEHAMEHA III AND THE UNITED STATES 1853 3¢ ISSUES.

This letter was carried by the American schooner "Restless", departing Honolulu on July 13th and arriving at San Francisco on August 9, 1854. A week later, the 3¢ pair was cancelled and sent on the mid-month sailing via Panama. It was then carried by the PMSC steamship "Oregon", departing San Francisco on August 16th and arriving at Panama City on August 30th after a stop at Acapulco. It was then carried by the "Empire City", departing Aspinwall on September 2nd and arriving at New York on September 12th. This cover is one of the very few examples with the U.S. stamps not applied over the Hawaiian postage.
