LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
2101 cover   image1917 (May 1), military censored postage due cover from Zagreb to Realna Gimnazija, Ruma, present-day Serbia, with violet boxed K.u.K. Zensurstelle / Zagreb / Zensuriert 3 censor mark, two Hungary 10f green and red postage due stamps tied by Ruma arrival (13 May), one stamp subsequently removed, yet otherwise fine, with interesting contents from the historian Viktor Novak.

The four-page enclosed letter is written in Croatian by Novak, later one of the foremost figures in Yugoslav historiography and paleography. Writing to his future wife Pava from the University Library in Zagreb, Novak describes the "Walpurgis Night" atmosphere of wartime Zagreb, mentions his work on "Konjović" and attendance at concerts including a performance by Weingartner, and expresses concern for Pava's wellbeing in Ruma, noting he is sending her books via official channels to ensure delivery to the school. 2104 cover   image1843 (September 8), the elusive "Empresa Indias" datestamp, in blue, neatly-struck on piece of incoming letter to Havana, further struck with a matching blue numeral 3 due marking, a choice example of this difficult strike, from the final decade of the company's operations, one of only a small number of examples of this postmark recorded in blue.

Established in 1827 by a group of Havana merchants, the Empresa Mercantil de Correos Marítimos ("La Empresa") was a private company authorized to modernize the mail service between Spain, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Operating a dedicated fleet of numbered vessels, the company held a semi-monopoly on maritime mail and taxed incoming foreign letters, until it was outcompeted by British steamships and closed in 1851.
