566 og 467 image1916, 5c carmine error in lower right sheet of 100, with error at upper right, three stamps and selvedge hinged in places, the balance being never hinged, including the block of nine with the error in centre, "7942" plate inscription in right and bottom selvedge, perfs sensibly hinge reinforced in two places, of little importance given the scarcity of this striking sheet, an ever-popular error, fine-very fine; ex Trimble. This famous error was caused by using a 5c transfer roll in re-entering three subjects, one being the 7942 lower right sheet, position 18, offered here, the others being 7942 UL position 74 and UL position 84. 571 E/P   image1911, Silas Allen engraved "PER CENT" compound essay, on card, approximately 87 x 87mm, signed and dated "Silas R. Allen 1911" in pencil at bottom, showing three distinct styles of "PER CENT" in green, light diagonal crease at right does not detract, else very fine, a lovely collateral item for the specialist perusing the work of Canadian engravers, this example likely used in the printing of stock of bond certificates of American origin.
Silas Robert Allen (1888-1958) was considered the founder of the Canadian School of engraving, and was the first great Canadian security engraver of the twentieth century. He engraved many well-known Canadian stamps, including the 1928 20c Harvester, 1947 Alexander Graham Bell, $1 Fishing Resources, $1 Totem Poll, etc, as well as stamps of Norway and the Bahamas. He also executed engravings for stock and bond certificates, including for the Wabash Railway Co. and the Chicago Union Station Co., and the Trans International Airlines Corporation; the style and nature of the vignette offered here suggests an intended use for the printing of financial instruments.
