869 CVR Great Britain imageGroup of Roughly 200 Great Britain and Worldwide Covers and Cards, 1841-1980s, in two cover albums, containing roughly 100 double-sided 2-row Vario-style stock pages, and a stockbook. The lot begins with an album of primarily Great Britain postal history starting with roughly 45 imperforate and perforated Penny Red covers, ranging from 1841 to roughly 1856, noting 10 having Maltese Cross postmarks. The album continues with roughly 30, primarily Victorian era covers, ranging from the 1870s onward, noting an 1880 cover to Yorkshire, rated at 2p, franked with Scott #58 (x2, plate 20, c.v. $240 each on cover), and #79. The lot continues with a second album, containing primarily Isle of Man first day covers, along with a few worldwide covers, including a 1940 Dutch East Indies censured cover to Canada, and a 1937 China registered airmail cover, via Hanoi, to the United Kingdom. The lot concludes with a stockbook of mainly Elizabethan special event cancels on piece. Online photos show a sampling. 871 CVR Great Britain image1847 Folded Letter Mailed from Argentina to United Kingdom, via Brazil, rated 2/7 (collect), this folded letter was mailed from the British Postal Agency in Buenos Ayres, Argentina on APR.8.1847 via Montevideo to Rio de Janeiro (arrived APR.29) carried by HMS Comus (a naval gun brig). It then left Rio on MAY.5 on HMS Crane (a naval packet) and arrived Falmouth on JUN.27, and was carried to London via railway closed bag, then to Edinburgh with a JUN.29 arrival. The letter was mailed during the Anglo-French blockade of the Port of Buenos Ayres (1845-1847). The contents tell of the anxious arrival of Lord Howden to "...negotiate the amicable arrangement of differences on this river...". Rare, and extensively written-up on an album page, with relevant shipping tables.
