1424 CVR Ireland image1921 I.R.A. Censored Cover, franked with a KGV 2d orange, mailed on JUL.1.1921 to Dublin, with JUL.7 receiver on front, with very fine strike of the 3-line "CENSORED / BY / I.R.A." handstamp in purple. During the War of Independence the IRA regularly raided post offices, gathering intelligence about police and military personnel and activities. The mails were examined and the "CENSORED BY IRA" handstamp was applied before returning ordinary citizens' mail to the Post Office. This was done as a propaganda move. Major faults, still a lovely example of the scarce handstamp.
