LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
1121 CVR   imageGroup of Four Incoming Folded Letters to Newfoundland, 1831 to 1834, folded letters are datelined Fethard Ireland (1831 to St John's), Thurles Ireland (1833 to St John's), Fethard Ireland (1833 to Port au Grave) and Island of Islay (small island off the coast of Ireland / Scotland) (1834 to St John's, inscribed "Per Leander"). 1122 CVR   imageGroup of 47 Newfoundland Slogan Cancel Covers from the 1920s and 1930s, from St John's, all but a few are addressed to Butler on Little Bay Island, some are drop letters and 5 were mailed to England, then re-directed. We noted rates including 2c, 3c and 4c, either franked with singles or combinations, and there appears to be a good variety of slogan cancels, including at least three in blue from 1924, overall very fine. 1123 CVR   imageCollection of About 650 Early Post-Confederation Newfoundland Covers from Small Rural Communities, all sorted alphabetically by town name, this is a better collection, with corner cards, registered mail, formular envelopes and more. The main value however is in the apparently all different assemblage of rare postmarks and other postal markings from small outports which have now been resettled, such as for example Bonald's Island, Tibbo's Hill, George's Island, Spotted Island, Point Rosie, Isle Valen, Horse Islands to name just a few of the many present. Condition is overall very fine, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a large quantity of rare material, either to add to an existing collection, have a strong start to a new and fascinating collecting area, or resell one by one online or at shows. 1128 CVR FF-24c image1927 60c Black King Henry VII on De Pinedo Flight Airmail Cover, mailed from Trepassey, Newfoundland to Rome, Italy and franked with a well centered stamp (without the red overprint), with free strike of Trepassey MAY.21.1927 datestamp, Rome JUN.22 slogan machine receiver on back and JUN.22 Rome c.d.s. receiver tying the stamp on front. The cover is addressed to A. C. Roessler at the American Consulate in Rome and the back of the cover has their handstamp dated JUN.23. A superb quality and rare cover as only 75 of these covers were mailed with the un-overprinted stamp (as opposed to 225 mailed with the overprinted stamp). It is interesting to note that some covers (such as this one) did not have cancelled stamps, as the flight was last minute and uncertain, and had it not flown, the owners could have redeemed the value of the uncancelled stamps. The Marchese Francesco de Pinedo reached Trepassey, Newfoundland, on May 20, 1927 in the course of his round the world flight aboard the Santa Maria II. On May 23 he took off on his attempt to fly to Rome via the Azores. Accompanied by a 1962 Bolaffi certificate, plus three expert signatures on front of the cover. Very reasonable reserve of Rsv. $4,000. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (Scan 3) (All Scans)
