983 CVR 38 image1884 5c Small Queen Canadian Nile Expedition Cover, mailed from Neilsonville QC (NOV.8.1884 in manuscript upper left corner) to "Surgeon Major Neilson / Canadian Contingent of Voyageurs / Wady Walfa / Egypt", through Québec City (NOV.8 transit) and London, England (NOV.18 transit). The cover is franked with a 5c Small Queen cancelled by a Bull's Eye cancel. The cover has an opening tear at left, still a very rare and coveted item, with Richardson listing only 12 covers known in his 1988 article (included in with the lot). 984 CVR 66/99 image1909 16c Triple Weight Registered Cover to Surabaya, Netherlands Indies, mailed from Berlin, Ontario on MAY.26 to Surabaya, Netherlands Indies through Toronto (MAY.26), London, England (JUN.6 registration c.d.s. in red), then sent back to Canada through London again (AUG.11 registration c.d.s. in purple) and ended up in the Ottawa Dead letter Office on AUG.21 (large oval in purple). The franking is made up of QV Leaf, QV Numeral, QV Provisional, King Edward VII and Québec Tercentenary Issues, totaling 16c, which paid the triple weight U.P.U. letter rate (5c for first oz, plus 3c per additional oz. after Oct. 1, 1907) and 5c registration fee. Very fine, with colourful franking and a rare destination. Surabaya is the capital of the Indonesian province of East Java and the second largest city in the country after Jakarta. 995 CVR MR2Bi image1915 Registered Admiral Early War Tax Cover to Egypt, mailed from Windsor Ontario on APR.19.1915 to the Indian Expeditionary Force in Egypt, through Toronto (APR.20 transit), with a Detroit, Michigan return address. The cover is franked with an MR2Bi (5c blue Admiral overprinted INLAND REVENUE WAR TAX) on front and six MR1 War Tax stamps on back totaling 8c. The overprinted War Tax stamps were issued to be used on fiscal documents, but a few rare examples are known used postally. Bit of aging and open on three sides for display, still a scarce franking and destination, plus an early use of the War Tax issues (rate in effect April 15th).
