1175 CVR   imageAdvanced Collection of Squared Circles, with 65 covers or cards, plus about two dozen stamps, all extensively written-up in 1987 on 70 large size quadrille pages, worthy of exhibiting. Starts with a great introduction including clear illustrations of the Types, a photograph of the Greenwich S.O. / S.E. instrument with description, then goes on with various Types and sub-Types, then followed by an extensive study of the duty codes, coded times, clear times, Christmas use, travelling post offices, railway stations, recuts, etc. Four line engraved stamps show squared circles, including two ½d, and we note many earliest and latest recorded dates throughout, note a red strike of Clifton / Bristol, a lovely strike of Throgmorton Avenue F / E.C. on a very fine £1 QV stamp (mentioned on page 392 in handbook). We note a few "Lonely Greats" including a partial on stamp of Chigwell Road (RF 500), Ashford / Kent (RF 475 for 1st Type, and LRD), Spennymoor (RF 475 and LRD), Sutton (RF 475 and LRD), Deptsford S.O. / S.E. (RF 475, with both the ERD and LRD), a number of RF 450 (including some ERD and LRD) such as Kilmington, Northumberland Rd / Margate, Stonehouse / Devon, Barham, Huttoft, Welwyn, and so on with examples of RF 425 and 400. The collection ends with some misspelled hammers and examples of late usages. A most lovely collection, with a few items removed long ago (not necessarily the better items), still a great opportunity to acquire many lovely and choice items. Scans online only give a small taste of this collection, we recommend inspection. We believe this was put together by the late Michael Millar.
