1263 CVR   image1897 Notre Dame St West Fancy Flag, Lacelle #1401 on a cover front (usual for the E.B. Eddy correspondence), mailed on JUN.30.1897 to Hull, franked with a 3c Jubilee (clipped perfs). This post office is known for having fabricated a number of fancy obliterators in the late 1890s including some that are referenced as duplex, as they are usually found at 3 o'clock of the datestamp. This example is the only known example on cover, and we are aware of at least 5 or 6 strikes on stamp, including a lovely pair of 1c Small Queens included in this lot. The lot also includes a 3c Jubilee cover (with flag and pole illustrated advertizing) mailed one month later on JUL.31.1897, this time using a vertically barred fancy cancel to obliterate the stamp. Last but not least is an 1898 cover from the same post office with a barred grid cancel, as well as a 1c Small Queen stamp with a fancy geometric cancel (Lacelle #1381) known used there in July 1897. A rare offering, accompanied by extensive documentation, including a 1979 letter from Abe Charkhow offering the flag cover to the current owner for $500, as well as a 1963 Topics article on these postmarks and some other various correspondence.
