Colonies Yvert #6, 22 French Colonies Yvert 6, 1865 80c Rose block of four, a highly select block of this key first issue high value with full large margins all around, in mixed franking with 1872 15c Bister horizontal pair (Yvert 22, slightly cut in), the pairFrench Colonies Yvert #6, 1865 80c Rose block of four, a highly select block of this key first issue high value with full large margins all around, in mixed franking with 1872 15c Bister horizontal pair (Yvert #22, slightly cut in), the pair is tied to an 1873 cover to France by rare blue "GPE" in lozenge of dots cancel with a similar strike centrally positioned on the block of four, matching small blue "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/26 Oct 73" double-circle c.d.s. and blue boxed "PD" handstamp, carried by British packet with this impressive franking paying the five times 70c rate of 3Fr50c, blue packet transit, backstamped Rouen, cover opened out and slightly refolded for aesthetic reasons, still very fine for this great rarity.During the normal period of use of the Eagle series in the 1860's the usual cancel used was the mute lozenge of dots in its various renditions of 7x7 or 8x8 points. Later, for a short period in the 1870's, an 8x8 point lozenge with the initials of the colony in the center was introduced. In Guadeloupe this cancel is very scarce and was infrequently used even during the 1870's. The high value franking on this cover involves the late usage of the 80c Eagle. Blocks of four of this value and combination frankings of the Eagle issue with the later Ceres values are rarities in there own right, but this extremely rare cover is the only recorded 80c Rose block of four with the rare "GPE" lozenge cancel; exceptionally attractive and a marvelous showpiece for the most advanced Guadeloupe collection; signed J.F Brun; ex-Levett. Ang./Pointe-a-Pitre Guade/16 Mars 75" sorting c.d.s. is equally well struck, posted through the British Agency with rare "Guadaloupe/Paid/MR 17 75" c.d.s., "4" pence British rate marked in red crayon then marked "2" indicating that it was a double-rate letter with a large ms. "1" marked through the black "PD" boxed handstamp for one shilling due, small red British "Guadaloupe/MR 17 75" c.d.s. on the reverse, most importantly is an extraordinarily rare black "Demerari/Paq. Fr. C No.1" octagonal French packet c.d.s. (Salles #1531) to the right of the stamps, this cover is especially choice with all of these rare markings being well struck and clear, extremely fine in every regard; this unique cover is going from one French Colony to another, but evidently the most efficient way to effect this passage was through the British Packet Agency which carried it to British Guiana where it was transferred at Demerara to the French packet receiving this extremely rare packet marking, whether the postage due for being overweight was ever collected is not known, but this is the only recorded cover with this French packet marking; an astounding rarity of both Guadeloupe and French maritime mail; signed R.
